The Walk Into A Bar Meme!

The bar's a comfortable place, where everyone knows you just have to walk up, give the bartender a smile, and order up a drink. Everyone goes to a bar sometime, whether to pick up a companion for the night, to pick up a friend, or pick up a drink. You never know the story behind the guy sitting next to you, or the bartender. But that's what bars are for, aren't they? To learn about the guy on the stool next to you, drinking his gin and tonic.

So what do you do in a Walk Into A Bar meme?

1. Comment here with your character and their canon in the subject line.

1. Sex on the Beach - You're here at the bar for one reason and one reason only, to find some company for the night. It might help, to buy them a drink first. But then they might throw that back in your face...

2. Tonic and Gin - Life's been one disaster after another lately, and the only thing that makes it easier is the sweet numbing taste of alcohol...

3. Midori Sour - Your friends dragged you out here and they've suddenly abandoned you for some rock star in the VIP lounge. Are you bitter? Maybe. Or maybe you'll just use the opportunity to flirt with the cute bartender...

4. Shirley Temple - You got a call five minutes ago asking you to come to the bar to pick up your too-intoxicated friend/brother/sister. But now that you're here, theydon't seem to be anywhere to be found...

Everything had gone to hell. People were dead. He could still smell the blood and gunpowder and explosives. Not even the cheap vodka he'd been pouring down his throat could push the scent out of his sinuses. He looked like he'd been working in a quarry, but no one had so much as glanced twice at him when he'd trudged in and put himself at the corner of the bar.

His shot glass was refilled again, and he tossed it back, wincing as he put the glass down again and nudged it towards the bartender. He was already drunk enough that he wouldn't be leaving under his own power, but his glare was still sharp enough to silence anyone that thought he needed to be cut off.

And when had that glare, or any other glare, ever worked on Duo Maxwell?

"One more." He called to the bartender before he tiredly slid himself onto the stool beside Wufei and leaned forward, arms folded across the bar top. For a moment at least. He pulled a face when he realised the counter was sticky and sighed.

"Add that to the long list of things to piss me off today." He muttered while sitting back and rubbing at his sticky forearm.

Wufei scowled at his shot glass as it was refilled, glancing sidelong at Duo as he rubbed at the sticky forearm. "Maybe I'll be cleaner when I leave," Wufei replied, his words much slower than they normally would be, but there was no slur. He lifted his own arm, to inspect the swatch of dust he'd left on the sticky countertop.

He grabbed the shot glass, tossing it back and wincing as he swallowed. "I'm starting to understand why Trowa likes this shit."

"There are better drinks than this." But Duo shrugged and, when his own was slid toward him, he grabbed the glass and knocked it back, letting it burn.

Everything had gone to hell in a handbasket that was for sure, but it wasn't as if that was anything new. It had hit Wufei the hardest it seemed. Duo wasn't entirely sure how to nicely tell him to suck it up, so ordered a refill instead.

"Horse piss would be a better drink than this," Wufei agreed, shoving another bill onto the table.

The bartender glanced at Duo, and poured another shot for Wufei, who immediately threw it back. "You know. It would've been. So much worse. Without you there." He paused, pressed the back of his hand to his mouth for a few seconds before continuing. "Thank you."

Duo just flashed his most charming smile for the bartender... But given his mood it may have come out a little more feral than he'd intended. He got his refill though.

"No problem, Wu. I just wish..." He sighed and distracted himself with taking his shot. Again he pulled a face and glared into the shot glass. Gin really wasn't the best. Whiskey might have been better. Hell, jet fuel would have tasted better.

"... When you're ready to go back I'm here to take you."

Wufei hummed in agreement, turning the empty shot glass in his fingers like he often did with teacups when he was lost in unpleasant thoughts. "I'm not so sure I should," he grumbled. "I'm a bad-luck charm," and he couldn't blame people for thinking that. So many of the missions he took went sideways -- of course, he only took on the most difficult ones, but failure was not something he'd ever dealt with very well. He rubbed a dusty hand over his face, sighed heavily. "I wish it had been me."

"Shut up." Duo sounded pissed off. He shifted his gaze sideways to Wufei. "Bad luck charm? Wish it was you? Fuck off with that noise. You're as bad luck as the rest of us. And wish it was you? Don't dare. What happened wasn't on you alone. You go into a mission with the odds stacked against you, yeah, you're just beggin for the shit to hit the fan. But sometimes you get lucky. When you don't, we don't have the luxury of wishing it was the other way around. You just get back up and keep on fighting. It's the only damn thing we're good at. Until you can't fight anymore, you don't stop. You never give up. Because only then you become a failure. And Chang Wufei is no failure."

At no point did Duo rise his voice. He didn't need anyone to overhear him. But his tone was angry. Low and fierce. He couldn't drill the point home with a punch so he did it with words as best he could.
