The Walk Into A Bar Meme!

The bar's a comfortable place, where everyone knows you just have to walk up, give the bartender a smile, and order up a drink. Everyone goes to a bar sometime, whether to pick up a companion for the night, to pick up a friend, or pick up a drink. You never know the story behind the guy sitting next to you, or the bartender. But that's what bars are for, aren't they? To learn about the guy on the stool next to you, drinking his gin and tonic.

So what do you do in a Walk Into A Bar meme?

Duo gave a little cough and decided that he was going to be a good guy and not make the comment he wanted to make regarding that stick. Instead he just grinned a little wider.

"Just a shame... But you ever change your mind about rememberin, or that stick, you know where I am." He straightened up then, just as the waitress arrived with their food and coffees. He thanked her and immediately pulled both plates toward himself. The waffles and pancakes were cut in half and shared between the plates before he pushed one plate toward Wufei. "There you go! Best thing to eat when you need cheering up."

It's not like Wufei was going to remember either way, but that was probably a wise decision. He leaned back as the food came, and snagged the coffee, pulling it close and holding it up to his face like tea, sniffing the steam and letting out a happy hum. "I do know where you are, all the time," he agreed.

Then he took a sip, and pulled a priceless face while Duo cut up their breakfast breads. "This must be the one from the jungle cat feces," he groused.

Duo's brow quirked up questioningly. 'All the time', huh? Was Wufei stalking him? Nah, it was probably just drunk talk.

"Nah, more like cheap, stupidly strong diner coffee. You get used to it. Add plenty of sugar, masks a world of hurt." Duo suited actions to words and added a good amount to his own coffee before he took a drink. Still bitter, but acceptable.

Wufei hummed softly, watching the sugar go into Duo's coffee before copying the tactic, managing to use almost the exact same amount in his own cup, sticking the once-licked spoon into it to give it a stir before taking another sip in appreciation. "Much better," he agreed, and then turned what was left of his attention to the waffles and pancakes.

He made a pleased sound at his first bite and then... good luck getting him to say anything, because his mouth was going to be full until the plate was empty.

Duo just looked very, very amused. And no, he didn't try and make small talk. He instead left Wufei to his food and ate his own.

There was one good thing about diners like this. It was hard to truly fuck up pancakes and waffles. And these kinds of places seemed to specialise in them. Even the bad ones were still pretty damn good. These he would rate a good four out of five.

By the time he'd finished his late night breakfast, he'd already ordered a refill of his coffee and had settled back to let his food digest.

It was delightful, and being that he was still all muscle, he could afford to eat a half-stack of waffles and pancakes each, and he polished the whole thing off. Even using that spoon to give himself a scoop of pure syrup.

The face he pulled from how intensely sweet it was, was sure a sight to behold, and he followed it with a laugh and more of that coffee. "This was the best idea you've ever had," he announced lightly.

Duo was a much slower eater than Drunk Wufei. He enjoyed them, though he was still eating when Wufei had finished. So with a smile he gestured to his plate and the waffles that remained.

"You can have more if you've room?" He offered, since he was such a nice guy. It was just fun watching Wufei having a near foodgasm over the massive amounts of sugar he was ingesting. If Duo was a lesser man he would have been taking pictures to torment Wufei with later. But considering the reason for all of this, Duo was less inclined to want to rub any of this in the other pilots face.

In truth, he believed Wufei needed this. Needed a night where he could just be free without judgement or consequence. Duo was just along for the ride.

He shook his head a little, and had to steady himself against the table when he did. "I do not think they would be as forgiving of revisiting it as you were with the vodka," he replied, slumping against the booth with a faint smile as he watched Duo eat.

He had needed it -- he didn't really know how to relax when he was sober. He could manage it physically well enough, but he'd never truly learned how to relax his mind. He could focus it, point it in whatever direction he chose, but to simply relax and let his mind wander? He was afraid to even try, worried about what memories he might end up revisiting.

Right now he was too drunk to worry about diving into his own past. He was situated firmly in the present, watching Duo eat with that weird little smile. "Do people call you beautiful?"

Duo almost choked on his pancakes.

What was that? Why the hell was Wufei asking him that? He blinked, wondered if he should be honest with the answer or not, then immediately realised NOT was probably for the best. So he grinned.

"Only when someone's tryin ta get in my pants. Or if 'disaster' is added on the end. Why'd you ask, Wu?" His grin widened. "Think I'm beautiful or somethin?"

Because even drunk, Wufei was a glutton for punishment, that's why he was asking him that. He hummed thoughtfully, putting his elbow on the table and sticking his chin in his upturned hand. "I do," he agreed with a little smile. "Not in the way a woman might be... more like a knife. A very ornate knife," he added, his gaze drifting to Duo's braid for a moment. "A very ornate knife that needs washed," and then he giggled a little.

Hadn't quite expected such an honest answer, nor the way Wufei was looking at him. Though he did notice that gaze go to his braid and Duo had to hide a wince. He knew his hair needed to be washed... It made him uncomfortable having it dirty but there was very little he could do about that.

Wufei's description of him though... Quite despite himself, Duo actually felt his cheeks warming.

"An ornate knife that needs a shower... Alright. I can live with that." He laughed and idly poked at the remains of his waffle with his fork. "I'm flattered, Wu. Didn't think you saw me like that."

Wufei smiled, nodding in reply as he relaxed. The food and the mission were catching up to him, making him feel pleasantly tired as he watched Duo poking at the waffle. "Have you ever seen yourself fight?" He replied, giving his head a little shake, as if the answer should've been obvious. "I see you in many ways," with a little hint of arrogance.

Duo's fork stopped moving then. He wasn't entirely sure he could trust himself to look at Wufei. The words seemed nice enough, he was sure there was a compliment in there somewhere. But Duo wasn't sure that there should have been one.

"... Don't like to think bout it much. Don't always like the way I am when I fight." It was necessary though. Someone had to do the things they did. For the sake of peace he'd be the bad guy they needed to get there so others could be happy. Duo just didn't see much that was beautiful about the way he fought.

"You said that before..." Duo did look up then, even going so far as to lean forward a touch, arms folding across the table. "You watch me, Wu? If I didn't know any better I'd swear you were sayin you like me."

He hummed softly, nodding a little. "I suppose you might not. My people value fighting as an art form, beyond a means to an end," so his natural inclination was to see the beauty in it, though he could understand why someone who had only ever seen it as a tool for survival would disagree.

He smiled again at the question, leaning forward a little. "Do you stop to watch the snow as it falls?" He shrugged. "I like you very much."

Yes... But he didn't understand how that applied to him. All he could do was shake his head and give a soft huff of laughter while wondering if this was actually how Wufei thought, or if it was the vodka talking? Would he still be able to admit that in the light of day?

Duo filed it away for later. There was no way he was going to let this go...

"As a friend to watch the snow fall?" He asked, eyes on Wufei now. On that smile... He really liked that smile. Maybe if he was lucky he could find a way of seeing that smile when Wufei wasn't so wasted.

He hummed in the affirmative, absently circling his spoon in his freshly refilled coffee mug, turning over the question in his very drunken mind. "I'll accept whatever you're willing to give," he decided at last. He was absolutely trashed, but there was a part of him that couldn't surrender all propriety, even now. "You'll have to remind me of this," because he sure as hell wasn't going to remember it in the morning when his head was trying to split itself open from the hangover.

"I'll remind you..." Duo promised softly.

There was no denying he'd been interested in Wufei for a while... But since he hadn't had the first indication that Wufei had felt the same, or had any interest in guys, Duo hadn't said anything. He was fine with looking but not touching. It was amazing to think Wufei could have been doing the same.

"Heh, if you're telling the truth, I'm willing to give anything and everything. I like you, Wufei." There. He said it. It was easier to do knowing Wufei wouldn't remember. Call it practice. If, once he was sober, he showed a continued interest, Duo hoped it would be just as easy.

He straightened up, letting out a huff as he frowned at Duo. "I may be drunk but I am not cruel, and I am well aware that though you are affectionate with everyone, you are not as..." he had to pause, digging around in his mind for the right word. "Invested as you outwardly seem. Knowing that you count me among your close friends is a point of pride and if there were even the slightest chance you felt more for me, I would propose immediately." He was serious enough that he almost looked sober for the moment.

Duo eased back and brought his hands up in surrender, a lopsided smile curving his lips.

"Whoa now, when did I say you were cruel?" He asked, keeping his tone as calm and even as he could. Making Wufei angry hadn't been his intention though somehow he'd managed it. Now he had to help bring him back down again. However that was hard to do when Wufei was spouting nonsense! His lips twitched, he couldn't help laughing. "You better not propose. I want at least a couple dates under my belt before you get down on one knee."

He scowled at Duo, the expression dangerously close to pouting as he sized the other man up again. "I would never lie about my feelings towards you. It would be cruel," just in general, but especially because of Duo's background. "And I don't think you would actually enjoy a date with me, I don't know the first thing about actual romance," and he sighed, deflating a little as he dumped sugar into his coffee. "I was betrothed from birth, that sort of thing wasn't important enough to pay attention to before, and now..." Now he was too damaged to let down his guard enough for that sort of thing. Unless he was drunk, apparently.

"I would marry you, though," he said, more to his coffee than to Duo. "We're a good match. Even the stars say so."

Duo held himself still. Still and calm. Wufei was a soldier, a drunk one, but he was still a soldier like himself. Or worse, he was a warrior. With that warrior code to boot. Feeling like he'd been insulted in some way, Duo wouldn't have been surprised if Wufei had lashed out and tried to punch him. Would even have let it happen. But thankfully it didn't. Thankfully Wufei settled down and Duo slowly lowered his own hands.

"You won't know unless you try." He pointed out as gently as he could. "You never got to try that the first time around. But where I come from you don't jump into that kinda thing, Wu. I'm not really the religious type but... so not into the traditions of marriage, but a little wine and dine goes a long way." Actually, Duo had never considered marriage as a viable option at all. He'd assumed he'd be dead long before anything like that could come up.

"... Whatcha mean by that? What do the stars say?" Did he know that Wufei was into astrology?

Wufei let out another long sigh, stirring his coffee and taking a sip, grimacing at the flavor as he set it back down. "I know," he replied softly. "That's why I don't try. I'd rather be your friend forever than chase you off with... with... plays and french food." He may or may not have consulted Quatre about what dates were supposed to be like.

He shrugged at the question, slowly rotating his coffee mug between his hands. "My matchmaker had it done and sent me a copy. Colony-born are hard to chart for, so all the results are... nebulous. But it was very clear that if I'm to marry anyone, they'll be from L1 or L2. So they told me to fuck off."

Duo tried not to laugh and thought he pulled something in his efforts. Plays and french food? Was that the limit of Wufei's dating knowledge? "Guess the date's gotta be left to me then. And Wu? I hate to tell you... there's a lot of us from those colony's. Needs to be more specific to be a 'match written in the stars'."

He shifted to the side, sliding out of the booth and pulled out a few bills to set down on the table.

"Lets get back on the road, Wufei. We can talk more later." When they weren't attracting attention. They'd already been suspicious on entering but Wufei's little outburst had earned them some attention that Duo didn't much like.

He took one more swig of the awful coffee before sliding out of the booth after Duo. He was much steadier on his feet now, humming to himself. "It was more descriptive than that," he admitted, managing to walk in a straight line. "Brown hair instead of black, fair skin, pale eyes." He waited until they were outside, out of earshot, before he continued. "Someone surrounded by death nearly as much as I am." Which narrowed it down to exactly two people, as far as Wufei was concerned, and he was pretty sure attempting to date Heero would land him in the hospital.

Alright, that sounded more like him... But at the same time, they were a people at war. He was almost certain he could find a hundred or more people who fit that description. But at the same time... would he really want to? He didn't put much faith in things like fate but maybe Wufei did? So mocking it was out of the question lest he set him off again. And here he didn't have a table between them to save him from Wufei throwing the punch he'd been asking for earlier.

"Still not marryin you, Wufei." He chuckled and reached out to lightly nudge the others arm. "But when you're sober we can come back to this." Duo knew he kept coming back to this, but he really didn't feel comfortable discussing this with Wufei right now. He felt like he was somehow betraying his friend. Wufei would never have admitted to any of this so easily if he'd been in his right mind. "So I ask you out when you're sober... You'll say yes?"
