The Walk Into A Bar Meme!

The bar's a comfortable place, where everyone knows you just have to walk up, give the bartender a smile, and order up a drink. Everyone goes to a bar sometime, whether to pick up a companion for the night, to pick up a friend, or pick up a drink. You never know the story behind the guy sitting next to you, or the bartender. But that's what bars are for, aren't they? To learn about the guy on the stool next to you, drinking his gin and tonic.

So what do you do in a Walk Into A Bar meme?

Duo was laughing when his phone rang. He answered and put it on speaker.

"You're on speaker, Quat. He as hard to keep pinned down as these two?" he asked and pulled a face at Wufei and Heero before he laughed again. "But listen. We're just talking. Do you guys have any plans for when we kick this thrice damned war to the curb?"

"He's very stubborn if you don't know what to bribe him with," Quatre agreed smugly. "I don't think we've really thought to much about it, except that we want to stay together."

Wufei made a face right back, while Heero just looked between the two like they'd gone mad.

"I want to go to school," Heero announced.

"I'd I bet you know just what that is." Duo laughed. "Yeah. Sticking together is what we want to do. Heero wants to go to school. I wanna go to a funfair and the beach. Wufei wants to go to a moon festival. And we wanna do those things together."

"School? Seriously? Military school?" Trowa wasn't sure he agreed with school. He didn't know it was a place he'd fit in very well.

"Regular school," Heero replied. "It's... normal," and that was what he was after, moreso than an education. J had included education in his training, of course, but nothing about how to live life after the war was over. He was expected to die, and on a certain level the whole conversation felt a little like betraying J. He curled himself up into a ball on his corner of the couch, even though it made his ribs throb.

"You're hurting your ribs," Wufei scolded, albeit gently. And kicked Heero lightly in the hip for emphasis.

Duo looked over in time to see Heero doubling up and was up and off the chair a moment later. "Nah, just normal people school, Tro. Learn what normal kids do, y'know? Math and science and all that jazz." as he spoke he'd moved across the room and dropped himself down between Wufei and Heero. Just as with the night before, he draped an arm across Heero's shoulders and made him sit up.

All the while he kept his voice light and friendly, even laughing, as if nothing was wrong and nothing to worry about. To Wufei he winked and nudged him with his other arm.

"Normal high school, huh." Trowa sounded thoughtful. He wasn't sold. But if Quatre went... He looked at him with a raised brow.

Wufei moved his legs out of the way when Duo came over, and maneuvered the blanket so Duo would get a share of it, too, smiling softly as Duo straightened Heero out.

It took a little convincing, but Heero eased out of the uncomfortable position and let himself lean on Duo instead. "Yes, normal," he agreed. "I want to know what it is."

"I'm not sure any of us knows what normal is," Quatre replied thoughtfully, gazing over at Trowa. "But I don't think it's such a bad idea to try, and staying together sounds nice... there aren't a lot of people out there who will be able to understand us when it's all over."

Duo didn't give up until Heero had straightened himself. The surprise was when he actually leaned against him that way. He didn't protest and just kept a hold of him so he didn't go and do anything dumb again.

"Yeah, that was my thinkin too, Quat. Who's gonna know what we need better than us? Sticking together, least until we've a better idea of where we wanna go, is best." it wouldn't be forever, he wasn't dumb enough to think that. But until they were stable enough to strike out on their own, sticking together was the only solution.

"So I guess school it is. You know it's gonna mean dumbing down to their level, right?" Duo grinned and looked down at the top of Heero's head. "No one likes a show off. You'll get bullied. Then get in trouble when you break their legs."

Heero hummed softly. "I found that out at St. Gabriel's," he agreed. "People tried to bully me after I tore up an invitation to Relena's party."

"Why? I thought you liked her," Wufei replied with a frown.

It managed to get a startled expression onto Heero's face. "Like her? She's insane." Said the pot to the kettle.

Quatre gave Trowa a look that clearly said 'we're going to have to babysit all of them'.

"Those snobs were assholes..." Duo muttered, but like Wufei, was stunned that Heero would have torn up anything belonging to Relena. "Uh, yeah, think we all thought you liked her. And we know she's insane!" He couldn't help laughing at that, but somehow it was a relief. His respect for Heero went up a little bit. At least he had some common sense, enough to realise the screaming danger that was Relena Peacecraft.

Trowa eased himself onto his side and watched Quatre with a small smile. They probably would. Duo they might be able to get away with unless someone pushed him, but the others had tempers enough that it could get complicated.

Heero made a face. "I don't like her," he said with a firm finality that meant he wouldn't tolerate hearing otherwise. "She's confusing," which was why he kept going back, trying to wrap his head around what she was doing and why. And more importantly to figure out why he couldn't bring himself to kill her.

"Regardless," Wufei said lightly. "We'll stick together. Even not knowing who we are, people would be fools to mess with us."

Quatre couldn't help laughing warmly. "Because of the power of friendship?" he asked, a little teasingly. This sounded an awful lot like the plot to a movie. A group of child soldiers go away to a normal high school and try desperately to fit in. One of them was going to have to be prom king.

Duo looked a little wonderingly at Heero, his whole world swinging on its axis. Heero didn't like Relena. He'd thought for sure he had. Now he was forced to look at things in a whole new light. He wanted to ask so many questions but he, for once, kept his mouth shut. Duo just shook his head and laughed.

"Damn right, the power of friendship can overcome all obstacles, Quat!"

Even Trowa couldn't help the brief chuckle, his smile soft as he watched Quatre. As much as he was aching and cranky, just watching that beautiful ray of sunlight helped put him at ease. And he would follow him to the ends of the universe. Even to a school.

"It's doable. We could look at places in our downtime. Find one we can trust." With a faculty they could trust.

Quatre laughed again. "I suppose that's our secret weapon for winning this war, too," he decided lightly. "If we pick a school near one of my estates, we can stay there together, unless you'd prefer boarding schools."

"As long as it's not a Chinese school, I'm not picky," Wufei replied with a shrug, melting into the sofa a little more.

"A building we control will be safer," Heero said, because he imagined there would be a lot of people unhappy with them when everything was said and done.

Duo set his phone down on his lap and reached over to tug Wufei closer to his side. If he was going to melt he better be doing it on him. He smiled at him.

"A building we control would be safer... But you'd not get that 'normal' you're after. Having a place we can all live would be great though, Quat. What we really need... Is to get someone on the faculty."

"Sally Po?" Trowa offered. He could have suggested his sister but she was busy with other things. When the war ends, what would Sally do? Maybe she'd be nice enough to help them out for a while. She wouldn't need to spend years at the school. Just long enough for them to get settled in and find their place.

Wufei hummed happily, shifting around a little to melt onto Duo properly. "Sally's a doctor. If the school is fancy enough to have one of those on staff, she'd probably be willing to do it."

"What about one of Quatre's sisters?" Heero suggested. "Or Howard?"

"Who's Howard?" Quatre asked, rather than answering about his sisters. "I'd suggest someone from the circus, but I don't know that they'd be able to stand staying in one place for so long."

Duo leaned his head to the side and against Wufei... Then burst out laughing at the idea of Howard joining the faculty of any school.

"Could you imagine? He'd say no just because they'd make him wear normal clothes and not those Hawaiian shirts. He'd go insane! I think Sally is our best bet here."

"Circus folk wouldn't want to give the circus up for staying in one place." Not until they retired at least and he didn't know any that were nearing that just yet. Trowa considered it some more. "If it comes to it, we can just payroll someone."

Heero snorted out a chuckle. "He looks like the professors in movies. Doc Brown, or Dolittle, or the one with the," he paused to gesture, but it didn't help. "The putty stuff."

"Heero I think your skull got hit harder than we thought," Wufei drawled.

"Those are some very old movie references," Quatre laughed.

"You know Flubber?" Duo stared at Heero in shock. Much the same way he'd looked at Wufei when he'd known about movies that Duo hadn't realised he'd know. This was an amazing revelation.

"They're really old and really cool movies!" Duo laughed happily. "But when you think like that I guess you're right. Problem is they were all fuck ups and he'd cause more problems than us!"

"Exactly," Heero replied. "He'd make a good distraction," and he smirked a little, pleased that he'd managed to surprise them. "When I lived with my father, we were always on the move. Sometimes he'd leave me in a hotel room, and that's what was on TV," he shrugged.

"I guess I'll have to catch up on those, too," Wufei decided with a little smile. "Is that what normal men our age do? Hang around at school and watch old movies?"

"It sounds pretty normal to me," Quatre replied, smiling at Trowa. "How much exposure do you have to old films?"

Duo couldn't help laugh some more. Though he did feel somewhat sad to hear that Heero was just left in a hotel room to his own devices. He tightened his hold on him just a bit. "Still, good taste. How do you feel about kung fu movies?"

"Normal guys our age hang around arcades, go watch movies, hang out at malls... extracurricular activities." He grinned and could easily imagine Heero as the 'jock type'. He supposed they could all do that if they wanted. Which would be a quick way of getting up the popularity ladder and earning themselves a place in the schools hierarchy. "After school stuff I mean, sports and things. Clubs, y'know? I'm sure that's stuff they do and not just stuff in movies."

Trowa pointed at himself and looked thoughtful, debated an honest answer, and then gave a single shouldered shrug. "I don't have any exposure. I can count the amount of movies I've watched on one hand." In fact he didn't really watch tv at all.

"I don't mind them," Heero replied, shifting a little against Duo to a more comfortable position so he could start actually relaxing. "I like the funny ones best."

Wufei lifted a brow. "I thought extracurricular activities was a euphemism," he said with a snort. "We should try all of it," he decided. "Won't know what fits until we do, anyway," and it sounded interesting, doing the 'normal' things.

"Well, we can put one on today," Quatre offered. "I've seen more than my fair share of movies, but that just means Duo and I can help find things you'll enjoy."

Duo was finding he didn't actually mind being in the middle of these two. Both Wufei and Heero were near lounging against him and he was happy as a clam, grinning and laughing at Wufei.

"Guess its both and nothing stoppin anyone from doing both! Part of the 'normal' experience, right?" trying it all was exactly what they needed to do. All the things that had been denied them through one reason or another. They deserved to have the chance to be actual kids.

Trowa's smile softened and he nodded. He'd like to watch a movie with Quatre. If it was something everyone else had done, or did, he didn't want to be left out of the loop. "I'd like that."

Wufei smiled, leaning up to give Duo's cheek a little kiss. "Right," he agreed warmly.

"It makes me want to accelerate the timetable," Heero admitted sheepishly. He didn't think he'd ever wanted anything as much as he wanted to try this 'normal' stuff.

"I think we'll let you go, then, and snuggle in for a movie. We should all make lists of the things we want to do together, after. And when this war is over, we'll compare notes and start checking things off," Quatre said, firm and resolute, just like his orders on the battlefield.

Duo's cheeks warmed when he was kissed and he couldn't help the lopsided smile that curved his lips. Wufei was being daring, doing that in front of Heero. But liked it. It was a little of that 'normal' they all wanted.

"Hey, we might not be able to do the whole school thing, but there's a bunch of stuff we could do. But that's a good idea, Quat. We'll get right on that. You two be careful." Duo called toward his phone and grinned. He gave his goodbyes and let Quatre be the one to hang up since his arms were occupied.

"But yeah, as I was saying, there's stuff we can do. Even if it's just watching dumb movies. When we've got downtime between missions, when you guys aren't sick or healin, we can do things too." Maybe they'd have to be a bit more sneaky about it or have to disguise themselves and use false ID's but so what? They could still have fun, couldn't they?

"You, too," Quatre replied, and hung up his end of the line, probably to put on a movie and snuggle up with Trowa for the day.

Wufei had decided not to give a damn about Heero's opinion. Especially since he'd been so blunt about Trowa and Quatre. "I think that's a good idea. A little risky, but who would really expect us to take an afternoon off to visit a boardwalk or something?" Wufei asked with a little grin. "I spent a couple weeks in a monastery, when I first arrived. It was nice."

"You would think a monastery is nice," Heero replied dryly, glancing around Duo at Wufei. "Do you like watching paint dry, too?"

"Oi, be nice." Duo scolded with a laugh. "Maybe it was one of those cool monastery's with the action monks who balance on one finger on the end of poles and defy gravity and stuff?" And Duo had no idea if he was being offensive or stereotyping, he only had movies to go on after all. Again those kung fu movies were coming into play.

"I suppose not all 'normal' stuff has to be adventurous. I'd like to go camping. Without havin to look over my shoulder." It might have seemed silly but it was something he'd always wanted to do. Just get a tent and go out and camp under the stars. Maybe catch fish or something?
