The Walk Into A Bar Meme!

The bar's a comfortable place, where everyone knows you just have to walk up, give the bartender a smile, and order up a drink. Everyone goes to a bar sometime, whether to pick up a companion for the night, to pick up a friend, or pick up a drink. You never know the story behind the guy sitting next to you, or the bartender. But that's what bars are for, aren't they? To learn about the guy on the stool next to you, drinking his gin and tonic.

So what do you do in a Walk Into A Bar meme?

Duo didn't stop him. Could have, but didn't want to get into an argument. So he sat there and waited until he heard Wufei's bedroom door close. Then he went about cleaning the rest of the dishes. He made himself a sandwich and then headed out to stock up on more meds, things he asked for were all for flu-like symptoms so he felt confident when he returned that he was armed enough to fight this with Wufei.

But that now left him with the rest of the day to contend with. So... He cooked some more. Portioned out those things so he could freeze them and just take them out as needed. Simple soups that would be easy in Wufei's stomach.

As the sun was setting he went and got a shower before he brought out two pillows and dropped them beside the wall next to Wufei's door.

Duo was quiet. He settled down and remained in guard for the night, in case Wufei would need him or his fever got worse. It was nearing morning when Duo, despite his best efforts, began to drift off. The chime of his phone woke him before he could really fall asleep.

After rubbing at his gritty eyes, he checked his phone with a deep frown. Instead of answering he pulled himself up to his feet and knocked on the door.

"Wufei? The hells going on in there? I'm not going anywhere."

The chime of the phone, right on the other side of the door, nearly scared Wufei out of a year's growth. Not that he had a year left to live.

He swallowed heavily, gazing at his face in the mirror. It took him a moment to get control of himself enough to trust his voice. "I'm dying," he said, more than a little relieved at the steadiness of his words. "It's pox, Duo. All over my face. You need to leave or you'll catch it, too."

What?

Duo's blood ran cold as he reached for the door. Locked. Now he was angry.

"Wufei... Open the damn door before I kick it in." deceptively calm was his voice, a clear warning sign. Duo didn't care what Wufei thought he had, he needed to see for himself to be sure. If it was something bad then he'd call in support. There was no way in hell he was leaving Wufei alone like this.

Wufei swallowed heavily, going over to the door and taking a moment to gather his reserves. "Alright," he said softly. "But don't come in. Just, just stay there. If you catch this..." he'd never forgive himself.

He took a deep breath, unlocked the door, and backed away to the other side of the room. "Okay," he called. He was pale, with his face flushed and covered in little red dots. His expression was tense around his lips and eyes, an attempt to conceal the terror that was trying very hard to strangle him.

Duo waited. When the lock clicked and the door opened, he counted to five and then strode inside only to find Wufei had backed away as far as he could. He scowled and walked straight up to him.

"Sorry, but in this I'm not taking orders from you." and with that he reached out, grabbed Wufei and pulled him right into his arms and into a tight hug. "You're not gonna die, let's just get that clear first." Duo's voice was low but firm. "Soon as it's open again I'll go and get more stuff. But... I'm not letting you die, okay? And I'm not plannin on dying anytime soon either. Not to something like this. Just trust me, Wufei?"

There was a flash of actual terror on his face as Duo pulled him into the embrace, punctuated by a whimper that escaped before he could stop it. Once he was in Duo's arms, he gave up on fighting and trying to keep Duo away. He was exposed now, properly, and there was nothing to be done.

Reluctantly, he returned the embrace, closing his eyes tightly as he fought down tears. "It's plague, Duo," he replied miserably. "The survival rate is not exactly inspiring," but knowing that he didn't have to face it alone, even if it was the end, was a comfort that he couldn't bring himself to voice.

This close there was no hiding the shudder Duo experienced when those words were spoken. The plague... The thing that had terrorised his younger years. One of the first of his traumas. The thing he didn't talk about. Duo's arms tightened for a moment, near crushing Wufei to his chest, before he made a conscious effort to be gentler.

"It's not." Duo promised, voice a little rougher than usual. "It can't be... It'd be on the news if it was here. Its... I don't know. I'll look it up but it can't be..." it couldn't have followed him here. It just couldn't have. It couldn't be taking someone else he cared about. Duo wasn't going to just lie down and let that happen. "I'm not letting you die, Wufei. Not now. Not ever."

He returned the almost painful squeeze when he felt that shudder, pressing his face into Duo's shoulder. He didn't trust his voice, so he nodded instead and took a long, shaky breath. "Thank you," even if it was false hope, it was still hope and he would cling to it for as long as he could.

"This is a hell of a hangover," he added, hoping he could lift Duo's mood at least a little.

The little shit got the laugh, even if it was a bit on the choked side.

"You don't do things by halves, that's for sure." Duo sighed and turned his head to rest his chin against Wufei's. He brought a hand up to even stroke his hair, doing his best to be as comforting as he could. All things he remembered from a certain nun he used to know.

"You're gonna stay on bed though. I'm gonna drag my mattress in here and sleep on the floor." there was no arguing with his tone, he was going to do it whether Wufei liked it or not. But first he needed to find out more about an illness that caused red spots. There was a memory tickling the back of his mind but he needed to be sure.

He relaxed when Duo managed to laugh, that more than anything comforting him. "No, I don't," he agreed thickly, relaxing as Duo's hand slid through his hair, still down from having been in bed, but snarled for the same reason.

"Okay," he agreed easily when Duo decided they were sharing the room. "But you're already exposed. You could just take half of my bed," it was a queen, and plenty large enough for two relatively small young men to share.

He didn't mind that Wufei's hair was that knotted like that, it gave him a reason to comb his fingers through it to loosen them up a little. It was just as silky as he remembered.

Duo pulled back a bit then, frowning. "You sure about that? If you're sick the last thing you need is another heat source being so close..."

"I'm sure," he replied softly, letting his gaze meet Duo's for a long moment before he continued. "When I was young, one of my parents would stay in my bed with me when I was ill," and then dropped his gaze. It would be a comfort, but he wasn't quite bold enough to ask for it outright.

"That musta been nice." He spoke as gently as he could, because he couldn't relate. Duo was sure he'd had a mother, but whether she'd cared enough to sleep with him when he was sick as a baby he had no idea. She'd not cared about dumping him on the streets as a child so why would she have given a shit about him being sick?

"Alright... If you're sure, we can share." He pulled back a bit more to give Wufei a much better look. The spots covering him looked sore. "But first, tell me how you're feeling? Does it hurt?"

"It was very nice," Wufei agreed, giving Duo's arm a gentle squeeze as he pulled back, too. "The same as yesterday so far, tired, achey, feverish, no desire whatsoever to eat..." he sighed and shrugged.

He reached up without even thinking about it to itch at his cheek.

Duo immediately lifted his own hand to catch at Wufei's to stop him.

"Ah ah ah, don't do that. You'll make it worse." Duo kept hold of the hand and moved with Wufei to the bed to sit down on the edge. "If you don't eat then you need to drink. I bought some energy drinks that should help. But more rest and less scratching."

He blinked as his hand was caught, forcing a little smile and nodding. "Sorry, I didn't realize," he admitted sheepishly, letting Duo lead him back to the bed and crawling into the obvious spot he'd been sleeping in earlier. "I'll drink and eat as much as I can," he promised, and squeezed Duo's hand in reply. "But I really do need to use the restroom first."

"Oh, shit... Was that what you were... Uh, yeah, you go do that." Duo actually flushed, looking embarrassed that he'd gone and dragged Wufei to the bed and the guy had just let him do it! "Tell me next time, Wu! I can't read your mind. I'll go get one of those drinks while you do, some pain meds as well."

Duo flashed a quick grin and got his ass up, leaving in a flash of black and a swish of his long braid.

Once he was downstairs though, he went straight to his laptop and popped it open. Bringing up a search engine he started listing off Wufei's symptoms to find out the best cause. Fingers crossing that there wasn't actually a plague outbreak because... That just wasn't happening. It wasn't taking another one of his friends. Never again.

He smiled, chuckling softly as he squeezed Duo's hand again. "I did tell you, just... slowly," because he was tired and not thinking entirely clearly. He smiled as he watched Duo go, before shuffling off to the bathroom to relieve himself and freshen up a little. Including gently splashing some water on his face.

Then he went back to bed, crawling in and bundling himself up. He drifted on the edge of sleep, waiting patiently for Duo to return and hoping that Duo's infectious hope was well-placed. Even if it wasn't, it warmed him all the way through to know he didn't have to face it down alone.

It took a little longer than he would have liked, mainly due to the fact that Duo had to search through a dozen sites and then do his best to not freak out since half of them claimed Wufei really was dying. Or had some nasty, near incurable illness. It took time to narrow it down until he thought he'd nailed it.

Eventually he returned to Wufei with two bottles, one of water and one of the energy drinks he'd promised. First he knocked and then he stepped into the room. "Still awake?" He called quietly, not wanting to disturb him if he had managed to fall back asleep.

Wufei hummed when Duo spoke, stretching his legs out with a groan and blinking his eyes open. "Mostly," he agreed, slowly sitting up to snag the water and take a long sip. "You look calmer," which meant either he didn't have plague or Duo had an even better poker face than Wufei'd thought.

"Pretty sure you're not dyin. But it's gonna suck for a while." Duo flashed an apologetic smile and sat on the edge of the bed, making sure he wasn't about to sit on any of Wufei's extremities first. Then he waited for Wufei to finish his drink before continuing.

"Looks like it's chicken pox. You never got immunised before you set out to Earth?" Duo had just assumed everyone had. But it looked like Wufei might have skipped out on injection day. That or this was a powerful strain that didn't care about vaccines. And if that was true then Duo was doomed. But he wasn't as afraid as he had been before. This was something they could get over.

He grunted softly and shook his head when he was asked about immunizations, setting his glass aside. "A year before Operation Meteor, the Alliance attacked my colony. They must've assumed their bioweapon was successfully released, because we never got any more shipments after that," which meant it was a matter of time before the colony ran out of parts for critical systems and something failed badly enough to kill everyone aboard.

Unless they won the war and were able to send supplies back to his home colony again. He looked at his hands and arms, already starting to show the faint red splotches that preceded blisters. He sighed heavily, listing to the side to rest his shoulder against Duo's. "I suppose I'd better get word to the others that I'll be unavailable for a couple weeks." It was no small relief that Duo wouldn't have to be. "And I suppose I'd better source some vaccines once I'm well again, so we don't have to do this again," he'd not worried about it before, expecting that first duel with Treize to end in his death.

Duo moved his arm so that Wufei could lean against him, he had his hand pressed to the bed rather than around Wufei's waist. He was fine pushing his luck most days, but with Wufei he didn't want to make assumptions. Especially when he wasn't well.

"Shit. Okay." He sighed. "Well leave it to me, I'll get word out that we're stuck here for a while. Get someone to come by and drop some things off. I've everything to deal with most of your symptoms, but when those spots start itchin, you can't scratch them, Wufei. Makes it worse or something. I'm not above tying up your hands to stop you either!" He wondered if he could request mittens...

Wufei nodded in reply, offering Duo a wan smile. He still felt like a pile of steaming garbage, but Duo's company was a balm. "If it comes to that, you'd better use handcuffs, I'm good at getting out of rope," he warned, smiling a little as if he were telling some kind of joke. "And thank you, again." He didn't know much about Duo, but he knew this was well beyond anything he deserved from someone who was about as close to being a stranger as you could get while fighting together.

"Cuffs not rope, I'll remember." Wufei might have just given him small smiles, but Duo's was as wide and cheerful as it usually was. While Wufei was down he'd do his best to keep things on the lighter side. Misery loved company and he refused to let the other be miserable. It was bad enough he was sick. He didn't need to wallow in it. They could try and make the most of the downtime.

"It's no problem. Just glad it was me here and not Heero. Almost was, actually. You got lucky!" Heero would probably have left Wufei to it, or been the most awkward of nurses possible in helping him out. It was an image creepy enough Duo almost laughed.
