The Walk Into A Bar Meme!

The bar's a comfortable place, where everyone knows you just have to walk up, give the bartender a smile, and order up a drink. Everyone goes to a bar sometime, whether to pick up a companion for the night, to pick up a friend, or pick up a drink. You never know the story behind the guy sitting next to you, or the bartender. But that's what bars are for, aren't they? To learn about the guy on the stool next to you, drinking his gin and tonic.

So what do you do in a Walk Into A Bar meme?

"Fine, we can stay a while since he's not up..." Duo's eyes were closed and his smile happy, Wufei was playing with his hair and he really liked it. It was oddly comforting.

Except something was niggling at the back of his mind and wouldn't let him fully relax.

Heero should have been up by now. So why wasn't he?

Just like that Duo shot up and rolled off of the bed, swearing all the way. "Fuck fuck fuck!" he was out the door in a heartbeat, not even giving himsf time to explain to Wufei what was wrong. Duo couldn't really explain the bad feeling he was having. He really hoped that he was wrong and he was being paranoid. But with everything that Heero had told him last night... What if he'd had nightmares too? What if he was reliving that awful day right then while he was laughing it up with Wufei? Heero wouldn't make a sound, would he? Maybe even his nightmares were silent? Duo so hoped he was wrong...

He knocked on the door, calling Heero's name in a rush. He counted to five. Called again. Five more and then he pushed open the door.

Wufei hummed softly, smiling down at Duo until... he suddenly was staring down at his empty lap, blinking a few times as he watched Duo go. The speed of his exit had Wufei getting up to follow as Duo pushed his way into... an empty room.

The bed was made to military precision, nothing was knocked askew or even the slightest bit out of place. It looked like a hotel room ready for its next guest.

Peering over Duo's shoulder, Wufei hummed. "I smell coffee."

Duo slumped against the wall and laughed weakly, a hand lifted to cover his face. Well didn't he look like an idiot? He near jumped when Wufei spoke at his side and cleared his throat, a light dusting of pink coloured his cheeks.

"Y-yeah, why don't you head down and see what's up? I'm just gonna run the bathroom and I'll be right down!" he sounded cheerful enough, practically dancing around Wufei and ducking under him to get passed and back down the hall. Distraction was key. He was laughing as he walked into the room and then the bathroom. The laughter stopped when the door closed.

His heart was hammering in his chest. The fear he'd felt just then scared him. The thought that Heero could have been suffering made him feel sick.

After a few calming breaths Duo moved away from the door. He dealt with nature's call before he ended up at the sink throwing cold water on his face. Only when he thought he was more in control of himself did he leave the bathroom and head down to the others.

Wufei watched him go, both eyebrows lifted. He went downstairs after a moment's hesitation, and when Duo came down to join them, Wufei and Heero were both seated at the dining room table with mugs of coffee.

And Heero even managed to look ashamed of himself, glancing up at Duo. "Sorry," and he paused, winced as Wufei kicked him under the table. "For frightening you."

Duo had walked in, all smiles, ready to put the whole thing behind him. Until he was brought up short by Heero's greeting.

The urge to run again was near overwhelming.

Flushed with embarrassment, he shot Wufei a look that could have been dirty if it wasn't for the hint of betrayal there. Then he forced a laugh and walked around to make himself a coffee too.

"You didn't. It's fine. Don't sweat it, yeah? Just let my imagination get the better of me is all!" he laughed again, sloshed coffee on the counter and cursed under his breath as he cleaned it up.

Heero grunted softly and nodded, busying himself with another sip of coffee.

And Wufei just rolled his eyes when he was given the look, shaking his head a little as he got up and went to pour Duo a mug, mostly as an excuse to get him to follow into the kitchen. Where they were slightly more alone. "I'm doing you both a favor."

"The hell you are." Duo muttered, letting a little anger through into his voice. "What good did it do telling him I freaked out?" and confirming that he was a monumental idiot. Heero Yuu could look aftrt himself. Where the hell did he get off thinking he could be of any use?

Duo gripped the edges of the counter. He'd thought he'd settled himself down. Clearly he hadn't even come close. "I thought wrong. That's all. It was my mistake. He didn't need to know..."

Wufei lifted a brow. "I didn't tell him you freaked out," he said softly, stepping closer and offering Duo the mug. "I told him that you were worried when he'd vanished, as any reasonable person would be. I told him that I was worried, too, until I smelled the coffee. There's no shame in caring for others, or being cared for in return," and it seemed like a lesson both of their thick skulls were particularly resistant to.

Good thing Wufei was stubborn.

And now he was even more embarrassed. He crouched down, hands still gripping the counter, and lightly banged his head against the cupboard door. "Can I call a do-over on today?" he asked miserably.

Why was he like this? He was so on edge for every little hurt either of the guys could have that he was overlooking the simple and blowing it all out of proportion.

Wufei smiled softly, setting the mug in front of Duo's hands and lowering onto the floor next to him. "Nope," he said lightly. "But you can sit here with me and take a deep breath or two, try to release some of that tension you're bundling up into your shoulders," he offered softly. "You're going to worry yourself sick, and then won't this house turn into a circus?" He grinned a little, because it was an excellent clown joke.

Little shit got his laugh. He quickly put a stop to it before it got out of control. He could hear the edge and knew Wufei was right. So... He just sat his ass down right where he was. Pretty much almost in the same spot Heero had sat down in the night before.

"Alright. Take a breath. Relax. Think uncircus thoughts." Duo flashed a weak little smile and dropped his hands into his lap. "You go sit, Wu. I'll just take a minute and I'll be alright. Back to the Duo Maxwell you know and love!"

He smirked when he got the laugh, nodding a little. "After I get up the energy to stand up," he promised lightly. "I didn't think the whole sitting on the floor with you thing all the way through, and my arms are useless noodles right now."

"Wufei..." Duo sighed and pulled himself up to his feet so that he could do the same for Wufei. He leaned down and gently gripped Wufei's arms to lift him up off of the kitchen floor.

"Come sit down." There wasn't time for breaths. He'd breath when he died. Or something like that. It didn't matter, he was happier when the others were not putting themselves at risk for dumb things. Like him. "I'll grab my coffee and come sit with you guys."

Wufei rolled his eyes, but knew better than to argue the point. He accepted the help up, and stole a kiss when he was on his feet again. "Thank you. And you'd better get some rest today, too, or I'll be the one sitting on people," he threatened with a little smile, before heading off to the dining room again to sit with Heero.

"Did I say it wrong?" Heero asked softly.

Duo rolled his eyes and grabbed his coffee before heading through to drop into the armchair that he'd dubbed 'his'. He pulled his legs up, bare feet on the edge of the seat and kept his mug between his hands and took a little sip. Then pulled a face.

"Bitter..." but strong enough to help wake him up so...he drank some more.

Wufei shook his head to answer Heero's question, sipping at his own coffee. "We had a disagreement, that's all."

Heero hummed, looking up when Duo came out, watching him drink it. "It's strong," he said, even though that was obvious. "Efficient."

"I don't think efficiency is always the best metric to measure things," Wufei decided with a chuckle. "But it'll certainly wake us all up. Any plans for the day?"

"Shower at some point." Duo replied quietly, not quite looking at the others but down into the dark depths of his coffee mug. He'd forgotten just when he'd last had a shower and that was kind of worrying. Otherwise he didn't know what they could do since they were homebound for the most part.

Heero nodded. "Rest. My symptoms are less severe. Dizziness is gone," he offered, glancing over at Duo, back at Wufei. He looked a little bit like he was flying blind.

"Rest is an excellent plan," Wufei agreed with a little nod. "Watch some TV maybe, do some very light stretching. Very light, I promise."

Duo glanced up then and looked from one to the other. Why did he feel like he was the one being babied? Wasnt he supposed to be looking after them? Not having a meltdown over something minor.

"Rest is a good idea... Don't push yourself, Wu." He took another sip of his coffee. "I'm sorry I'm a basket case."

"You're not a basket case, you're under considerable stress," Wufei replied lightly, taking another swig. "How much sleep did you actually get last night?"

For a long moment, Heero stared into his mug. "There are board games, under the TV."

"What stress?" Duo demanded unhappily, irritated that Wufei would think helping his friends could be a stress. But as for the other question... He deliberately didn't answer. If he didn't answer he couldn't lie.

"Oh yeah? I saw them the other day." Duo cocked his head to the side and gave Heero a curious look. "You play games?" and be was being nice... Helpful even. Duo wondered if he really was so screwed up be was even making Heero freakin Yuy nervous.

Wufei lifted a brow, held up a hand. "Dragging me home from a bar while I was completely drunk, preventing me from breaking my neck while doing so, sticking around when we both thought I had plague, nursing me back to health, scraping me off the floor more than once," each of his fingers popped up with one of his points. "And that's before Quatre or Heero showed up. You've been going nonstop for almost a week, worrying and caring for others instead of yourself, but if you'd like me to continue with the play-by-play..."

"I've never tried," Heero replied with a shrug, once he could get a word in with Wufei's little rant. And he shot Wufei a weird look, too. "I would like to."

Alright, so it was a lot but he still didn't think that looking after friends was stressful... But somehow he'd made it that way. Duo sighed and began rolling his mug slowly between his palms.

"Okay okay, I get it." Duo gave a small shake of his head. "Maybe we could break out the games later, Heero?"

Wufei nodded a little, managing to look smug as he drank the last of his coffee.

"Okay," Heero agreed. "I'll read the rule booklets," and memorize them. Evaluate the games by whatever metric he decided they needed to be evaluated by, and then decide on one and set it up while no one was looking, probably. "Do you want breakfast? We have oatmeal."

Duo snorted a low laugh. "And suck all the fun outta the games, huh?" He joked. After a breath he lowered his legs and took another drink of his coffee before sliding to the edge of the chair. "Sure, I'll go get that done. Oatmeal good for you too, Wufei?" He'd already stood up and making his way into the kitchen to handle breakfast even as he asked his question. Duo knew Heero was probably offering to make breakfast, but the guy had busted ribs. Standing around over the stove wouldn't be good for him at all. Keeping busy was the best thing for Duo.
