The Walk Into A Bar Meme!

The bar's a comfortable place, where everyone knows you just have to walk up, give the bartender a smile, and order up a drink. Everyone goes to a bar sometime, whether to pick up a companion for the night, to pick up a friend, or pick up a drink. You never know the story behind the guy sitting next to you, or the bartender. But that's what bars are for, aren't they? To learn about the guy on the stool next to you, drinking his gin and tonic.

So what do you do in a Walk Into A Bar meme?

"What stress?" Duo demanded unhappily, irritated that Wufei would think helping his friends could be a stress. But as for the other question... He deliberately didn't answer. If he didn't answer he couldn't lie.

"Oh yeah? I saw them the other day." Duo cocked his head to the side and gave Heero a curious look. "You play games?" and be was being nice... Helpful even. Duo wondered if he really was so screwed up be was even making Heero freakin Yuy nervous.

Wufei lifted a brow, held up a hand. "Dragging me home from a bar while I was completely drunk, preventing me from breaking my neck while doing so, sticking around when we both thought I had plague, nursing me back to health, scraping me off the floor more than once," each of his fingers popped up with one of his points. "And that's before Quatre or Heero showed up. You've been going nonstop for almost a week, worrying and caring for others instead of yourself, but if you'd like me to continue with the play-by-play..."

"I've never tried," Heero replied with a shrug, once he could get a word in with Wufei's little rant. And he shot Wufei a weird look, too. "I would like to."

Alright, so it was a lot but he still didn't think that looking after friends was stressful... But somehow he'd made it that way. Duo sighed and began rolling his mug slowly between his palms.

"Okay okay, I get it." Duo gave a small shake of his head. "Maybe we could break out the games later, Heero?"

Wufei nodded a little, managing to look smug as he drank the last of his coffee.

"Okay," Heero agreed. "I'll read the rule booklets," and memorize them. Evaluate the games by whatever metric he decided they needed to be evaluated by, and then decide on one and set it up while no one was looking, probably. "Do you want breakfast? We have oatmeal."

Duo snorted a low laugh. "And suck all the fun outta the games, huh?" He joked. After a breath he lowered his legs and took another drink of his coffee before sliding to the edge of the chair. "Sure, I'll go get that done. Oatmeal good for you too, Wufei?" He'd already stood up and making his way into the kitchen to handle breakfast even as he asked his question. Duo knew Heero was probably offering to make breakfast, but the guy had busted ribs. Standing around over the stove wouldn't be good for him at all. Keeping busy was the best thing for Duo.

Heero hummed thoughtfully. "Maybe." The joke whistled as it flew past, above his head. He slurped up the last of his coffee and got up to follow Duo into the kitchen.

Because he knew what Heero was about to get told, Wufei just stayed put. "Sounds good," he agreed, shifting in his chair to watch with no small amount of amusement. "Might wanna tape some ice packs to your shadow, though. Christ," the edges of bruises were visible on Heero's shoulder, and a little at the name of his neck. "What happened?"

Duo turned around and blinked, honestly not having realised that Heero had followed him. He took a step back, then leaned to the side to look at Wufei beyond Heero. "Ice packs?" Okay, so he was a little slow on the uptake and it took the 'what happened' for Duo to realise who Wufei was talking about and what he was looking at.

With an unhappy frown, and clearly taking his own life in his hands, Duo moved forward and turned Heero around. Without a word he yanked up the back of Heero's shirt and grimaced at the sight. "The fuck? I told you to tell me about this shit!"

Heero frowned at them both. "I did," he replied sourly. "I said I might have cracked ribs," which would come with bruising. "I'm not a machine," he grumbled, mostly to himself.

"I think we've got some ointment for bruises up in the bathroom. I'll go get it," Wufei offered, getting up to do just that. He was moving more slowly than usual just because of how much he ached, but also so as not to worry Duo.

Duo sighed and reached out to gently reached out, warm fingers moved over Heero's side to see just how bad 'cracked' was. Absentmindedly he thanked Wufei for going to get the stuff.

"I know you're not." Duo said then. "Even a machine knows to come in for a service before it breaks."

It was true enough that most of the ribs were 'only' cracked, but there was one that shifted noticeably when Duo touched it, and made Heero's breath hitch. His shoulders hunched a little when Duo spoke to him, but he didn't say anything in return, just waited for Duo to do whatever he was going to do.

Wufei made it back down the stairs in one piece and opened the jar of ointment, making his way over to start gently rubbing it into what he could see of the bruise at Heero's hairline. "How bad are they, really?" he asked softly.

Duo apologised when Heero reacted in pain. He'd tried to be as careful as he could be clearly not careful enough.

"At last one break." Duo sighed. "Could be more but one is gonna cause issue. So standing up and moving around is a bad idea. But Mr Unlimited Pain Tolerance here just keeps grinning and bearing it." Yes he sounded a bit irritated, but only because he gave a shit. And even as he was speaking he'd reached out for more of that ointment to apply to the bruises he could see on Heero's back and shoulders.

After a few seconds he couldn't help grinning, then laughing softly. "Probably paintin an interesting picture right now. Sorry about that, Hee. Think you can grin and bear it some more? We'll let you go soon as you're creamed up."

"I've been resting," Heero protested, with more than a hint of petulance, glancing over his shoulder at Duo with a little frown. He nodded in response to the question, holding almost perfectly still for them.

"And you're going to keep resting," Wufei agreed. "Until this is healed up properly. Until we say it is healed properly," he amended quickly, because he knew that Heero would decide for himself if they didn't force the issue.

"Yeah. But resting for a day isn't gonna be enough." Duo pointed out as he raised a hand to rub the cream into Heero's shoulder.

"Trust us. Think you can do that?" Duo was trying something new. Since joking around didn't seem to work on Heero he was attempting to use a gentler approach. Maybe he'd listen if he actually showed he cared? Or maybe he'd just make himself look weak in Heero's eyes?

Heero sighed softly, watching Duo work for a long moment and seeming to take that question seriously enough to think it over. "Yes," he decided, and turned his head back. "The bruise goes up to here," he added, lifting an arm to show Wufei how far up into his hair it went.

So, Wufei started putting the cream in Heero's hair, working it down to the scalp. "Thank you. Hopefully it'll feel better faster with this stuff," he'd used it for years but he still wasn't sure if it worked or just distracted him from the discomfort.

He gave a soft sigh of relief and nodded. When he smiled, Heero had already turned back, so missed it and Duo didn't say anything more.

After he finished he pulled Heero's shirt back down and stepped back to go and wash his hands and get out the things he needed to make oatmeal.

"You guys go sit down. See what's on TV." He grinned. "Maybe there some cheesy daytime movie on?"

"Alright," Heero agreed with a nod, heading into the living room.

Wufei flashed Duo a little smile, and followed Heero out. "Make sure there's enough for you, too." He was not going to let Duo get away with neglecting himself any more than Duo would let him or Heero do it.

Duo winked over at Wufei when ye caught that smile, but shook his head at the order. He'd not planned on starving himself. Though he really didn't need to eat nearly as much as the others did. But he actually liked oatmeal.

He took his time making it, humming softly to keep himself entertained, and separated it all out into three equal bowls once it was ready.

The bowls were taken out and Wufei and Heero were given there's. Duo put his own on the table and went back to bring out some honey and syrup. The latter of which he'd put on his own. "Dunno if you guys like it plain or sweet. But it's there if you want it." He smiled and dropped back onto his chair, bowl in hand and lightly blew on it to cool it down.

Wufei and Heero got a movie playing on the television and settled into the sofa together to watch it while Duo cooked. This time, instead of arguing, they ended up sharing a blanket, and both thanked Duo when the oatmeal was handed over.

By the time Duo returned with the syrup, Heero's bowl was already half empty. He eyed the honey and syrup, glanced between Duo and Wufei... then grabbed each bottle to give it a sniff, before pouring a little of the syrup into his own. His face was priceless when he took a bite, brows going up as he chewed. "It's good," he murmured, and added more, mixing it into what was left of his oatmeal before offering it to Wufei.

Who took it and put a much smaller swirl of the stuff onto his own waiting bowl.

Duo just stared for a long while, just watching what Heero was doing with the syrup and his reaction to it before he ended up with his face in his hand and laughing.

"God dammit..." He muttered to himself between his laughter. "The hell is with these cute reactions? First Wufei now you? Did neither of you even bother to try food once you got to Earth? I can't handle this." While Duo hadn't tried everything, he'd given a few things a go. But syrup? He'd first had that when he was with the Sweepers. Honey he'd had a little of when he'd been at the Maxwell Church. It just amazed Duo at how deprived these two were and he was the street rat who had grown up with nothing but had somehow experienced more.

Heero and Wufei blinked at him like a pair of owls, then shared a look as if trying to decide if Duo had cracked under the strain of looking after them. But then he spoke again and their attention returned to him. Wufei had the decency to blush, but Heero didn't.

"I stuck to what I was used to," Wufei admitted softly. "I didn't really consider how much I'd been missing out on."

Heero took a little longer to work out an answer. "I was ordered not to. Rations can't get you sick," so long as they were in-date and undamaged, anyway. Eating regular food was always strange for him, but he took another bite and let himself savor it.

With his face covered he missed out on those looks but couldn't help laughing even more at the answers. Maybe he had lost it? Or maybe he just saw it as the cutest thing since god invented kittens? Whatever it was, Duo was laughing brightly as his hand came down. He made a decision then. To find a way, even in little ways, to broaden their horizons. Syrup was just the tip of the iceberg!

"You two... need to actually live a little!" He grinned merrily over at them. "When this is over? I'm taking you both to a theme park. We're gonna go on every single ride and eat every single thing. You're gonna learn what fun actually is!" And maybe what it's like to be an actual normal human being for once. A kid. Since none of them had really been given that chance.

"I'll agree to that only if we all agree not to turn any part of it into a competition," Wufei replied, smiling a little as he did.

Heero grunted his agreement, around a bite of oatmeal. "I want to try cotton candy," he decided after he'd finished his bite.

"Only competition comes from playing the stall games! But even then it's gotta be in fun and not serious." Duo's grin managed to get even brighter when Heero offered up his suggestion. "Dude, you're gonna get that. And everything else they have!" The cotton candy was the one he'd been thinking of the most. If Wufei and Heero had liked syrup their mind would be blown by cotton candy.

If only they could have snuck away now... But he supposed they could wait until the war was over and done with. Then they would be able to properly relax and have a good time. And, of course, rope Quatre and Trowa in on the action.

"You know," Wufei glanced between Duo and Heero. "It's pretty common for those stall games to have teddy bears for prizes. Some of them are bigger than I am." He'd seen pictures, though he'd never been to one himself.

Heero's eyes widened like he'd just been promised every Christmas he'd ever missed as a kid.

"Yep!" Duo agreed cheerfully. "All kinds of plushies! All kinds of weird and wonderful crap! And we'll do it all." And with their particular skill set he was damn sure they'd win those stalls. He'd heard tell that some were rigged so you couldn't get the big prizes. That was only an issue for normal people. None of them were particularly normal and had the strength and accuracy to prove it.

"So we win all the toys. Eat all the fair ground food. And ride all the rollercoasters and haunted houses and everything else! Fuck it, I'll even hit the merry-go-round if they've got one!" And the Ferris wheel. He'd wanted to ride one of those since he'd seen it in a movie once. Admittedly it had been a romance, but that didn't mean a guy couldn't ride one just because!
