The Walk Into A Bar Meme!

The bar's a comfortable place, where everyone knows you just have to walk up, give the bartender a smile, and order up a drink. Everyone goes to a bar sometime, whether to pick up a companion for the night, to pick up a friend, or pick up a drink. You never know the story behind the guy sitting next to you, or the bartender. But that's what bars are for, aren't they? To learn about the guy on the stool next to you, drinking his gin and tonic.

So what do you do in a Walk Into A Bar meme?

1. Comment here with your character and their canon in the subject line.

Heero grunted in what almost sounded like agreement. "I won't be needed, if I survive the war." He would die fighting or be executed if they lost, which meant they had to win if he expected to live. He wasn't even sure if he would like to.

"I couldn't kill Relena," he said softly. "Or you."

Duo considered throwing his bottle at Heero's head, but didn't because of that concussion.

"You really are an idiot. You will be needed. We'll fucking need you. The five of us. Who the hell knows what we've all been through? We're gonna need each other, Heero."

At the next part, Duo blinked. "... And that's a failure on your part, huh? You still want to kill me, Heero?" Duo asked just as softly. Wondering if he needed to be sleeping with one eye open tonight. If he slept at all.

His hands squeezed the bear again. "I never wanted to," he replied, letting out a soft sigh. "I don't like to kill," getting the words out was almost painful.

Booze and sickness made Wufei honest. Possible brain damage did the same for Heero. Now wasn't that just something?

Duo gave a much heavier sigh, finished off his soda and pulled himself up out of his chair with apparent effort. Once up, he took himself over to the sofa and dropped back down again, this time at Heero's side. Duo...he was a glutton for punishment, apparently. Which was what made him hook an arm around Heero's shoulder and pull the guy into a one armed hug at his side.

"Heero, buddy. None of us like it. Despite what the media tells everyone we're not all psychopaths." And he called himself the God of Death, not because he went around killing, but that people he loved died around him. "It sucks. But if it means that there are kids out there having fun and living normal lives, I'll do what I need to. If it means one say we'll see peace... It's worth it. Which is why you need us, Heero. Going alone'll break you. But havin someone to lean on?" he gave him a little squeeze around the shoulders, mindful of the ribs. "It helps."

Heero watched Duo come over, plop down next to him. He considered what Duo said carefully, and, yes, when squeezed, he shifted a little to lean against him. "I killed a kid. By accident," he said softly, holding the bear up so Duo could see. "I was careless with the explosives, a suit tumbled into a residential building. It... injured me." He couldn't think of any other way to put it. Something inside him had broken when she found that little girl.

"Well shit..." Duo couldn't help it, he held Heero a little tighter then. A kid. There was always that fear of collateral damage, they all tried to minimise it as much as possible but mistakes could be made. They tried not to think about it. Clearly Heero thought about it.

"I'm sorry, Heero." his tone had gentled now. The hand on Heero's shoulder rubbed slightly. "But it was an accident. I'm just... The kid had a bear like that, huh? That's a good way to honour their memory you know? Keepsakes. That way they don't truly die, if someone's around to remember them."

Heero nodded, looking down at the bear and running his hand over its head. "Her name was Mary," he murmured, letting himself accept the comfort that Duo was offering. Maybe it was the concussion, or knowing that he wasn't the only one needing or wanting comfort, but he was willing to accept it, for the time being.

"When the war is over, I'm never going to kill again."

Duo knew this record already. He was well versed in the procedure here. Offer support. Listen to what has to be said. Pretend it never happened the next day. If the other even remembered. And with Heero's head injury who could even tell? He sure didn't. For now he'd be here and let Heero lean on him a little, get the feelings out, and then he can go being a stoic grump with a stick wedged firmly up his ass.

"Then maybe name the bear after her? And... yeah. I hope you don't have to." He hoped he didn't have to either. He had a standing offer with the Sweepers he could always fall back on, if his dreams of opening a petting zoo for llamas falls through.

Heero nodded, and hugged the bear to his chest again. "Mary," he agreed softly. "Thank you," he knew Duo considered this sort of thing normal, but it still meant a lot to him, that Duo was willing to do it. It wasn't something he'd gotten much of, as a child. Even with his parents, who he could hardly remember anymore, it hadn't been the sort of childhood that was anywhere near normal.

He straightened up a little, just so he could look at Duo properly. "If we win, we won't," he said firmly, like believing it strongly enough would make it true. "We can be people." Instead of weapons, machines, robots, perfect soldiers. He'd fight any war if he would get to be human when it was over.

Duo did think it was normal. But he wasn't dumb enough to think this was normal for Heero. Or Wufei. Even for Trowa. Quatre... was a whole other story. Duo understood what a big deal this was which was why he was taking it seriously and not cracking jokes. It was why he'd took a risk in sitting next to Heero and offering him his side, offering him some level of comfort while Heero dealt with what he was feeling.

He just didn't expect this to be a common occurrence or something that would be acknowledged in the light of day.

When Heero pulled away, Duo let his arm go lax, loose enough that the other could move with ease. Then he blinked at him, the corner of his lips twitched into a smile. "The hell is all this 'if' business? We're gonna win, Heero. We're the good guys, remember? Good guys gotta win. So we can be people. So we can get our happily ever after too." Because by gods they deserved it.

Heero couldn't stop himself from smiling in reply, letting out a quiet hum as he nodded his head. "When," ha replied, and he actually smiled at Duo. And it wasn't even a creepy smile, it was one that made him look his age for a minute. Maybe, one day, they'd get to be regular kids for a while.

Wouldn't that be weird? Heero chuckled to himself, getting to his feet. "You should rest, too."

Okay, well that was an image he'd take to the grave with him. Heero freakin Yuy had smiled at him. No calling him an idiot. No scowling, growling or grunting. An honest to goodness smile. And Duo was helpless against it. He smiled right back. No, no it was safe today he damn well beamed right back. A broad and happy smile followed by a low laugh and a mock salute as he watched Heero get up.

Duo just folded his arms behind his head and let his eyes close. "Yeah yeah, I'll rest up soon. You call me if any of those symptoms get worse, alright?"

Heero nodded and promptly took himself upstairs, treating the orders to rest like they were actual orders for once. Once he was out, he was staying that way for far longer than he normally would have.

Wufei slept a slightly more reasonable amount, curled up in the bed with his panda for a good eight hours before he finally cracked his eyes open again. He felt like he was doing nothing but sleeping, but he supposed that was because he was sick. And freshly vaccinated. And maybe a little irritated from how much he was aching after said vaccinations.

After Heero had left for bed, Duo had remained where he was for a good while. He didn't sleep, he was kind of wired if he was honest. His thoughts kept chasing each other, round and around in his mind. So much had happened in the last week. So much new information. And now this with Heero? It was crazy. And yet, there he was, sitting in a dimly lit room staring up at a ceiling and suddenly feeling an overwhelming sense of loneliness.

It was what finally made Duo get up.

He made a circuit of the house. Checked everything was off, checked all the doors and windows were closed and the security system was activated before he took himself upstairs. He hit the bathroom first. Did what he needed to, changed into pyjama's and then slipped silently into his bedroom. Wufei had found his way back into his bed again. Duo smiled tiredly and crept closer.

When Wufei awoke it would be to find Duo curled up behind him, deeply asleep.

He rolled over when he realized he wasn't alone, and couldn't help smiling at just how out Duo was. There was a brief, fleeting thought that he should get up, go make Duo something to eat, but he was not a stupid man, he knew how that would end.

With him probably on the floor, Duo flustered and irritated and worried, and... instead, he just stayed put, snuggled himself into Duo's chest, and waited for him to wake up.

By all rights Duo should have woken up the instant that Wufei was in his personal space. Except he didn't Wufei wss able to snuggle up against him without any problem. And if allowed to wake up naturally, it would be another two hours or so before Duo gave a low little groan in his sleep.

It started as little twitches of his hand, grasping at something that wasn't there. Then he shifted away from Wufei and onto his back. He was breathing harder now, face pale, a cold sweat beading at his hairline.

Duo didn't thrash. He used to. But even though he'd moved his nightmares were very contained. Even his scream was pulled back, sucked in with a sharp, almost painful breath just as it was about to leave his throat.

And then he was awake. Awake and staring up at another ceiling and quietly sucking in deep gulps of air to fill his lungs.

Wufei stayed in bed with him the whole while, but when Duo rolled onto his back, there was no mistaking what was happening. Wufei wasn't sure what was safe, so he stayed where he did until he saw Duo's eyes open.

Then he slid his hand out, onto Duo's chest, settling over his thundering heart. "I didn't know if it was safe to wake you," he whispered, a half-apology.

"It's fine..." Duo choked out, voice rough and shaky. He brought one of his hands up to cover his face, to rub at his eyes. Already the dream was fading away and leaving him feeling hollow.

"Probably best." Maybe he would have reacted well, maybe calmed or maybe he would have hurt Wufei? And if he'd hurt him, Duo would never have forgiven himself. He probably would have run. Run very far away. Would never have been able to look Wufei in the eye ever again.

He swallowed thickly, his throat dry, and rubbed his face before dropping his hand down to his chest and finding Wufei's there. A soft, breathless little laugh and he threaded his fingers with Wufei's. "Sorry... I didn't hurt you, did I?"

“I wouldn’t let you,” Wufei assured. “But all you did was roll onto your back and twitch a little,” enough that the nightmare had been obvious enough for Wufei to think twice about touching him, though.

“Are you okay?” As okay as one could be after a nightmare, anyway.

"Good. Good..." He'd not done anything stupid. That was good. And clearly had been quiet otherwise Heero probably would have kicked their door down, gun in hand. "Yeah, I'm fine. Just a bad dream..."

Duo took a deep, shaky breath and turned his head to look over at Wufei. He gave him a gentle smile and eased himself over onto his side to face Wufei. "But how're you feeling?"

Wufei slid his hand up Duo's chest as he rolled onto his side, until his hand rested lightly on Duo's cheek. "Tired, sore, cranky. I'll be back to my usual grumpy self in no time," he smiled a little.

Duo's eyes slipped closed, quite liking the way Wufei's hand moved up his body to touch his cheek. He was even able to smile. Even stretched out his own arm to drape across Wufei's waist.

"It'll ease off soon enough. The pain and tiredness at least. Don't know if there's anythin we can do about your grumpy ass." he said with a chuckle.

He chuckled right back, shifting himself a little closer. "Oh, I can think of a couple ways you can make me less grumpy," and he leaned in, to give Duo a little kiss. "There's this weird thing couples do, you'd probably hate it, I'm asking for a grand sacrifice here," he mumbled, scooting nice and close, just shy of proper snuggling.

It wasn't quite close enough. Duo's arm tightened to curl around Wufei, pulling him flush against his chest even as he heaved a heavy sigh.

"You're right. I'll probably hate it." He said with forced sorrow... even as he delicately placed a kiss upon Wufei's lips in turn. "But for you I think I can make that sacrifice."

He chuckled softly, sliding his arm over Duo as he was tugged close and returning the kiss warmly. "Yeah, it'll be such a pain, I'm sure you'll whine about it for ages. The horror of getting all snuggly with the grumpiest bastard this side of the sun," he cracked a grin.
