The Walk Into A Bar Meme!

The bar's a comfortable place, where everyone knows you just have to walk up, give the bartender a smile, and order up a drink. Everyone goes to a bar sometime, whether to pick up a companion for the night, to pick up a friend, or pick up a drink. You never know the story behind the guy sitting next to you, or the bartender. But that's what bars are for, aren't they? To learn about the guy on the stool next to you, drinking his gin and tonic.

So what do you do in a Walk Into A Bar meme?

1. Comment here with your character and their canon in the subject line.

1. Sex on the Beach - You're here at the bar for one reason and one reason only, to find some company for the night. It might help, to buy them a drink first. But then they might throw that back in your face...

"Maybe? It's just a guess. What the hell do I know?" Duo laughed to himself. It was kind of funny. Drunk Wufei liked him. Sober Wufei liked Heero. There was definitely no way Duo was winning that battle.

But he really didn't like that look in Wufei's eyes. He frowned. "... Did I say somethin wrong? I wasn't supposed to say anything? Shit, Wu, I'm sorry. Ignore what I said, yeah? I'm an idiot who talks too much, remember?"

He shook his head a little. "No, no, it's just... if I survive this war there are certain expectations for a man of my breeding," he shrugged his shoulders. "I'll likely be marrying Nataku's cousin when I return home."

"Oh..." Hah, well shit. That was as good as being told 'don't get too attached'. Duo wished he'd known that before. His hand dropped and suddenly the congee just looked like paste. He didn't think he'd be able to stomach any more.

If it wasn't for the 'man of my breeding' maybe he would have made a joke. If it hadn't put it all into perspective for him.

And yet he was still able to summon up a smile from somewhere. "She cute too?" He asked with a low laugh before he grabbed up his bowl to throw away what he couldn't eat and get the bowl cleaned.

He laughed, forcing down another bite. "I have no idea. I won't meet her until the wedding, assuming I live that long," honestly it was tempting to just... not. Now that he was out in the world and free to do as he pleased, well. There were a lot of things about his old life that he didn't want to return to. "The only good thing about arranged marriages is that they tend to be open, once an heir has been produced."

Duo turned, leaning against the counter he slowly dried his hands on a kitchen towel.

"I don't get that." He said quietly. "Arranged marriages. What the hell happened to marrying for love? Aren't you allowed to do even that?"

Wufei shrugged. "There are some of us who are, but between what happened to my parents, and then my wife... they're doing me a favor." As crazy as it was. He finished off his congee and got up to bring the dish to the sink. "It'd have to be a love marriage for someone else to have interest in me. I've nothing more to offer."

Duo lowered his eyes, then his head, lost in thought. Lost in memories. Not even a week ago, he remembered the night he'd found Wufei drunk. The things he'd said. The things they'd said... the stupid promised they'd made. Duo had known it had been ridiculous to have done it while Wufei had been drunk, but somehow... somewhere deep down... he'd kind of hoped that Wufei would remember him.

Except Wufei hadn't remembered and still didn't remember.

And then suddenly Wufei was right there next to him, brushing passed him to get to the sink.

Just as suddenly Duo's hand had shot out to grab Wufei by the wrist. His grip was firm but not so strong Wufei wouldn't be able to pull away.

"Bullshit." He breathed, eyes lifting to pin Wufei with his gaze. "You've everything to offer. You... Ah, to hell with it..." He'd been good. He really had. But he couldn't stand hearing Wufei saying that about himself. So he pulled at that wrist he'd been holding, yanking Wufei right into his arms... and kissed him.

Wufei froze when Duo grabbed his wrist, gaze snapping up to search his face, assuming of course that there was some sort of threat he'd missed, some reason for sudden tension. But then their eyes met and he was frozen for an entirely different reason, eyes going a little wide.

He moved towards Duo when he was yanked, drawing a sharp breath, and... oh. It took a solid second, but he found the ability to move again, lowering his bowl to the sink or the counter or... wherever it ended up, he wasn't paying attention to that. He was paying attention to Duo's lips on his, as the tension slid out of his body and he leaned into it, eyes sliding closed. His heart was racing, but everything else seemed to be slowing down, to an achingly slow crawl so he could paint this memory into his mind with the vivid detail it deserved.

He kept his eyes closed when the kiss broke, a little smile tugging at his lips. "Bet Heero Yuy isn't that good at kissing." Sure, diffusing tension with humor was usually Duo's thing, but he could borrow a page out of that playbook from time to time.

What was he doing? Why had he done this? He'd planned to wait. To wait and see if Wufei remembered anything. But it had been days and there was still no hint that Wufei was ever going to remember. So maybe this would jog something? Or maybe he'd get punched. That was valid too. He'd get punched, thrown against a wall, bones broken and then he'd never see Wufei again. And he probably deserved that.

He heard the clatter of the bowl as it was dropped on the counter and... Wufei wasn't hitting him. Was leaning more into him. Why? Why?

The kiss had been soft, a little awkward but it hadn't been planned. It didn't last long before Duo was pulling back, an apology on his lips, but Wufei spoke first. And as joked went...it wasn't the best. There was a rule that comedians employed called 'know your audience' to help gauge whether a joke would be a hit or a miss. And right now, even if it was a positive, being compared to Heero was probably the wrong move to make.

Duo went a little pale and his arm dropped from around Wufei. He stepped back. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have..." not when Wufei liked someone else. Not when he didn't remember. Duo felt like a fucking idiot.

Wufei was notoriously bad at reading people, and this was no exception to that rule. He could pick apart the most complex of political or strategic problems... but predict someone's reaction to an emotionally charged situation? Not a chance.

He reached for Duo, his smile vanishing. "What? No," he said firmly, giving his head a shake. "I'm sorry. I'm not very good at jokes, I..." And now blush was crawling up his cheeks and down his neck. "I wouldn't have kissed you back if I didn't like it," it was as close to an 'I like you' as he could get himself, at the moment.

Duo still felt panicked and flighty and damn near bolted when Wufei made a grab for him. But he wss also rooted to the spot. Still pale, still looking ashamed of himself. Duo shook his head and quietly replied. "You don't have to say that..."

And then... Duo laughed. He forced himself to. Forced himself to smile and wave it all of. "Haha I'm bad at jokes too. Don't take me too seriously, Wu! I just... I..." but the lie wouldn't come. He couldn't lie to Wufei. Not to his face like this. And not if he thought for even a second that his words might hurt him.

"No," Wufei said softly, hand gentle where it was around Duo's wrist, thumb rubbing gently. "No, I don't have to say that. I didn't have to kiss you back, either. You know me, would I have just stood there and let you do something to me that I didn't want?" he sighed softly, gaze searching the other's face. "I won't pretend to fully understand what I feel but whatever it is, I don't want to let it go."

"I'm sorry..." He breathed the words again, not quite able to look Wufei in the eye but still not able to move away either.

"I should've waited. I should have... But I just hated the way you were talking about yourself and the way you looked. And I just wanted..." he'd just wanted Wufei to know there were options. That his fate wasn't sealed yet. But was stupid enough to believe he would have any impact on Wufei's choices.

Gently he moved a hand to remove Wufei's from his wrist. "I know you wouldn't, Wu. You're a good guy and I...I took advantage of that. Its okay if you don't like me back, I get it." was he actually hearing the words Wufei said? Unclear, maybe not all of them. Duo was having a hard time keeping himself together. He'd never done anything like this before. Had never just thrown his heart out like that. And now he was afraid.

"Idiot," Wufei breathed the word, reaching up with both hands to cup Duo's cheeks if he could. "Look at me, Duo. Look."

Duo reacted to that word like he'd been struck, visibly flinching. But again, he didn't move away. When hands rose he expected to be hit, not taken between them. He swallowed past the lump in his throat and forced himself to look. He forced his eyes to meet Wufei's. And there was no hiding the pain and the shame in those deep blue depths.

He hadn't had the word for what he felt, not until Duo looked at him, until he could feel his heart crumbling in his chest. "You really can't see how much I love you?" He brushed his thumbs over the curve of Duo's cheekbones, as if wiping away tears even though there were none. "You're so friendly and kind with everyone, I didn't realize..." he sighed softly.

There should have been tears. There would have been tears, if Duo could cry. But boys didn't cry. Even if this was a damn good reason to he refused to let the tears fall. Instead he let his lashes fall and closed his eyes, shielding him from the image in front of him.

"Neither can you." He replied quietly. "You can't blame me if you've never seen it too..." And Duo had been louder with his feelings. No, he hadn't outright said the words. Not directly. And not to a sober Wufei. But he'd genuinely thought his actions would show just how much he cared.

"But I'm not, Wufei." Duo shook his head then and opened his eyes once more. "I'm not friendly and kind to everyone. I act the fool with everyone. Keep them laughing and they've no time for questions. But you..." with Wufei he'd not wanted to do that. He'd wanted to be close. At least enough to be his friend. Duo didn't dare dream for more.

"But I know..." Duo's tone quietened as he took a shaky breath. "I knew...you liked me. I just couldn't say anything."

He huffed out a quiet chuckle. "I suppose not," he agreed softly, gently pulling Duo closer as he listened, so he could press their foreheads together and narrow the world down to just the two of them. "We must both be idiots, then."

"Because with me you've been kind, and gentle, and understanding, even when I didn't deserve it. You make me feel safe, like there's a little piece of home with me, whenever you're near," and he leaned in, to kiss him tenderly if Duo didn't pull away.

Duo didn't resist when he was pulled, he had no power to stop Wufei. No will of his own. But he did start to shake his head when he was told they were both idiots. Wufei wasn't an idiot. Not by a long shot. Duo wanted to protest but Wufei just kept on talking.

He wanted to shout as well. Wanted to point at all the things Wufei had just told him as proof of his feelings. Of course he'd been kind and gentle and understanding. He was that way because Wufei deserved it. Because he'd wanted to show just how much he'd given a shit.

But again he wasn't given a chance to reply before lips covered his own. Wufei had leaned in before he could be stopped, not that Duo could have stopped him even if he'd wanted. They were soft, the kiss was gentle and Wufei's lips were so warm... Duo's hand slowly lifted press against Wufei's chest, but he didn't push him away. It took him a second but he slowly returned Wufei's kiss.

He let out a tiny, relieved sigh when Duo kissed him back, sliding his hands down Duo's neck, over his shoulders, until his arms were lowered to loop around his waist. Holding him, but not firmly, not so much that Duo couldn't pull away if he wanted. "I'm sorry," he said softly when the kiss broke. "I never meant to hurt you."

When arms went around his waist, Duo let his own arm raise the rest of the way to curl around Wufei's neck. He had no plans on moving unless Wufei pushed him away.

"Shut up." Duo closed his eyes and pressed his forehead against Wufei's when they finally parted to breathe. "I don't wanna hear you apologise, Wufei. You haven't done anything wrong." it was his own fault for being sensitive. Build walls high enough, when they come crumbling down he had no way to defend himself. But that wasn't Wufei's fault at all.

He chuckled softly. "Alright, how about I thank you instead?" he replied. "Thank you, for being so kind to me. Thank you for risking your life to make me feel safe. Thank you for making congee. And most importantly of all, thank you for telling me how you feel," and he punctuated each one with another little kiss, relaxing as he held Duo close and let out a happy little sigh.

With each kiss Duo was battling a smile. It was hard. By the end of it he had to laugh.

"You're not mad?" he had to ask as he pulled back to look at Wufei. "I'd hoped you'd remember. But then you got sick and..." more and more he had started to think Wufei was never going to remember. And then hearing Wufei talk about arranger marriages and how no one would want him. And maybe there was a little jealousy at the thought he might pick Heero over him...

He couldn't help laughing, too. "Mad about what?" he replied, shaking his head a little. "I've nothing to be mad about. You're in my arms now, aren't you?" He smiled, stealing another little kiss. "Should be mad at myself, for getting blackout drunk in the first place," especially since he was fifteen, and knew damn well that it was terrible for his body, but he'd also believed himself likely to be dead in a year's time.

"Yeah, well, you had a reason for that." And who could have predicted the kind of conversation they'd end up having afterwards?

After another soft kiss, Duo's arms tightened around Wufei and held him damn tight. He hugged him, laughing softly even while he buried his face in the others shoulder. "So you're not mad... And you like me back... And this is okay to do. Haha this is insane." and why did he sound so happy about that? It was all he'd ever wanted.
