The Walk Into A Bar Meme!

The bar's a comfortable place, where everyone knows you just have to walk up, give the bartender a smile, and order up a drink. Everyone goes to a bar sometime, whether to pick up a companion for the night, to pick up a friend, or pick up a drink. You never know the story behind the guy sitting next to you, or the bartender. But that's what bars are for, aren't they? To learn about the guy on the stool next to you, drinking his gin and tonic.

So what do you do in a Walk Into A Bar meme?

He just needed the right person to show off for, apparently, or just to be comfortable enough. He hadn't thought Duo would actually agree to try it out, but his smile warmed when Duo came over.

"Just remember, it should feel like stretching, and if you start to fall go with the movement instead of trying to regain your balance. You'll hurt less from hitting the ground than pulling a muscle," Wufei warned, and reached out to help guide Duo into a starting stance; Legs a shoulder's width apart, arms relaxed at his sides, knees slightly bent, and mirrored the pose in front of him. "You are water, flowing down the creek bed," he said, and guided Duo through a simple movement, stretching upwards, onto the balls of his feet, and then teetering forward only to catch themselves with a step forward, stretching in that direction in a movement that was a little bit like swimming.

If he fell he'd go with the movement and fall flat on his face. Because this was a lot weirder than he'd been expecting it to be. But he tried to follow Wufei's lead. He really did. He wavered a bit on a few occasions, almost losing his balance and tried really hard not to laugh at all the Bruce Lee shit. This was serious, at least he thought it was supposed to. And Wufei was taking the time to teach him. So Duo did his very best to be a good student.

Even if he felt silly doing it!

As silly as it was, it was also kind of nice. Not relaxing, not in the least. But doing this with Wufei felt good. Eventually he found himself smiling.

Wufei would catch him, and probably fall right with him if he did that, but that was part of the charm of it. He couldn't help huffing out a chuckle now and then at the faces Duo was pulling as he concentrated, and his smile bordered on a grin when Duo finally found his stride with it. "It feels much less silly when there's a big group of people doing it, and a man with a reed threatening to swat your shins if you don't keep up," he admitted warmly, guiding Duo into the next pose almost effortlessly. Or at least it might've looked that way if Duo wasn't close enough to see the sweat beading up on his shoulders, at the nape of his neck, over his lip.

"Wouldn't do this if it was a big group and a cranky bastard with a stick hittin me." Duo replied with a laugh. No way would he let someone hit him with anything while doing something like this. Good thing, too. Duo was likely to hit back!

Luckily Duo was close enough. He'd noticed the wobble from earlier as well but hadn't thought much of, but now he was starting to wonder...

Wufei'd had a rough night, there was no way he was fighting fit, yet he was still doing this. Duo wanted to say something. But instead of saying anything he gave a little gasp. Deliberately widened his eyes in surprise and made a show of losing his balance and ending up down on his ass in a heap. Once there he laughed again at his own bad luck.

"Think that's a good place to call it for me, Wuffers!" He snapped his fingers then and quickly scrambled to his feet. "The stew! I forgot. Should be okay but... Hey you hungry?"

He laughed when Duo said he wouldn't have done it in a group. "Yes, you would've been the troublesome student hanging from the rafters like a monkey," he teased lightly. When Duo 'fell' back, Wufei reached to catch, but only ended up tumbling down next to him, laughing as he rolled back up to his feet almost as quickly as Duo did.

"Famished," Wufei agreed, wiping a hand over his neck to clear away the sweat with a smile. "Did I do anything particularly exerting yesterday night? I'm a bit more tired than just a hangover ought to cause." Not that he'd had one before to measure against, exactly, but he wasn't used to his body telling him to pump the breaks.

Crisis averted! Saved face and Wufei's pride by not bringing attention to the signs that the guy needed to rest. They were Gundam Pilots. They were kind of dumb when it came to pushing themselves to, and then passed, their limits. Duo knew that well enough.

What he didn't expect was for Wufei to actually bring it up.

"Nothin I can think of?" Duo really gave it some thought too. "Drinking. We drove for a while. Stopped for pancakes. Got here. You got a shower and then went to bed. That about rounds it up." He waved to the kitchen table before heading to the stove to check on the stew. It was fine, of course, but a quick stir was all it needed. With a pleased grin, Duo fetched two bowls.

It was an anomaly, something he needed to examine and figure out so it wouldn't interfere in the future. If it really was from just drinking too much, that would be easy enough to solve by just not repeating the mistake.

"The mission itself was fairly taxing, but nothing that should've caused this level of fatigue," which wasn't much, but enough that it could've made a mission more difficult than it needed to be. Enough to shave seconds off his reaction time. "Hopefully it's just from the hangover, then."

Duo looked over his shoulder, brows kitted in concern. He really wasn't liking the sound of that.

"... Maybe we need to take you in? Get you checked over." He spoke and spooned stew into the two bowls then carried them over to the table. One he set before Wufei and the other himself. Spoons were already on the table.

"You didn't get hurt on the mission did you? Notice any weird bruises when you woke up this morning?"

He shook his head quickly as he lowered into a seat at the table. "I'm sure it's nothing to worry about. This is my first experience with a hangover," and he didn't want to think about it being anything more complex or dangerous than that. Gundam Pilots didn't have time to be sick. "I've not seen or felt anything more than moderate bruising," which was to be expected with how he'd managed to pull himself out of the mission gone wrong.

Duo didn't believe that it was nothing to worry about but he didn't push it, just decided to keep a closer eye on Wufei. The last thing he needed was for some kind of internal injury to go intreated because of stubbornness. Duo just nodded and reached for his spoon and flashed a lopsided little smile.

"Eat up. Might help you feel better with somethin solid in your stomach." And then more rest. No more flailing about, just in case.

It was true enough that Wufei was stubborn, but he was also a fairly practical guy most of the time. He's not the one with a history of setting his own broken bones and limping the injury off, at least. It's just that the sensibility had never extended itself to illnesses. He'd been remarkably healthy as a child, and it had been years since he'd gotten so much as a cold.

But he'd also spent all that time on one colony or another. Down here, where the germs were native, it was a lot harder to stay healthy. And because A0206 had been declared destroyed, external shipments of little things like vaccines had stopped.

"Alright," he agreed, pulling hid bowl a little closer and having at it. Half of it, anyway. He lingered at the table, drawing out his bites, gazing down into the food. It was good, but he felt like he was fighting himself, every time he took a bite. It was downright peculiar.

Yeah, he was worried alright. It wasn't even a heaping bowl full but Wufei couldn't even finish it. Duo had a bowl of his own so he knew it didn't taste awful. Unless Wufei's pallet was so refined that the simple stew just didn't do it for him?

Again though, Duo wouldn't push. He finished his own meal and set the spoon atop the bowl before propping his elbow on the table and dropping his chin onto his hand.

"What're your plans now? I'd set you should rest some more but I don't have a gun to your head. You feelin any better?"

Honestly, Wufei was a little concerned by it, too. He hummed as he dragged his spoon through the stew. "I'm feeling... peculiar," he admitted. "And we've a week before we need to be anywhere, so I suppose a bit more rest is in order," he agreed, and licked his spoon clean, not at all aware of how similar it was to when he licked the spoon at the diner, and got up to put it in the sink, before putting some wrap over his bowl of stew and getting it into the fridge.

On the one hand, he'd noticed Duo was more on edge about wastefulness than the rest of them, and on the other he was colony-born and as used to conserving resources as the rest of them. So the snotty little rich kid from L5 was not at all above having leftovers. "I hope you won't take my appetite as an insult, it was delightful," but his stomach just wasn't cooperating.

Duo most definitely tried not to watch what that little pink tongue was doing, but averted his gaze a little too late to notice. And a little too late to avoid the slight darkening of his cheeks. Luckily for him Wufei had gotten up to put the leftovers away which gave Duo a chance to sort himself out.

After a mental ass kicking to remind him that he wasn't supposed to be thinking thoughts like that, he twisted around in his seat and gave Wufei as reassuring a smile as he could. "Relax. I'm glad you're able to eat as much as you did. But if you gotta rest then go for it, Wu." He'd finish cleaning up and arrange the living room back the way it was. Duo could make himself useful while Wufei slept.

Wufei was not nearly with it enough to notice, which probably should’ve been taken as further indication that something was very, very wrong. “Thank you,” he replied, with another shallow bow before heading back up and into bed. Without even thinking about fixing the furniture himself. He was throwing up little red flags all over the place.

And he even managed to sleep once he was in bed again, curling up on his side and snoozing right up until dinner time, and only then waking because a mild storm had rolled in and he wasn’t used to the sound of rain yet. He was positively flushed when he sat up, rubbing a hand down his face, then over his neck. He’d been sure sleeping was supposed to improve things, but he felt much, much worse. He was even sweating, just from existing.

Duo watched, worried as all hell, but unsure what he could do to help Wufei. All he could really do was monitor the situation and if it got worse then he could do something then. He hoped.

In the meantime he went about cleaning. The things from lunch were cleared away and the rest of the stew refrigerated. He fixed the living room. And then for the hours where Wufei was asleep he pottered about doing whatever he could to keep his mind occupied.

When the rain began he ended up glued to the window watching. And when that rain turned to a storm, Duo was at the backdoor with a mug of tea in hand watching it. The sky had darkened and, if he was lucky, he got to see little flashes of lightning. The rumbles of thunder had Duo smiling and lips moving in a slow count until he got those flashes.

Colony born, he'd never experienced 'weather' until he'd come to Earth. And he loved it. Rains in particular where so damn powerful. Duo felt like he would almost feel the energy thrumming in his bones.

Wufei had managed to freshen up a bit, but he still looked downright rosy by the time he made it down to the ground floor. To find Duo standing in the doorway, gaping like a… well, he couldn’t think of what at the moment, his whole head felt like it was stuffed with cotton.

“You’re going to get struck by lightning if you keep standing in the weather,” he warned, voice so rough he hardly recognized it as his own. Wufei had been on colonies all his life, too, but rather than finding the weather enticing or beautiful he just found it fucking terrifying. At least when it came to thunder and lightning. He’d ridden out a monsoon in Nataku a few months back and the incident was not something he particularly wanted to repeat. It was like the Earth itself had been trying to fight him.

Duo near jumped out of his skin, tea sloshed out onto his hand as he spun around and cursed. He transferred the mug to the other hand and lifted his scolded finger to his lips. Wufei had given him a near heart attack. But when he turned to see the other, his heart almost stopped.

"... Buddy, you look like shit." Duo dropped his hand, set the tea aside and closed the door. He was a little on the damp side from standing so close to the rain but Duo didn't seem to care as he hurried over to Wufei. Immediately he'd lifted a cold hand to press against Wufei's forehead. His eyes widened. "... You're burning up."

He frowned tightly at Duo’s reaction, leaning back when the hand landed on his forehead. “It was too hot in the bedroom, and your hand is ice cold,” he insisted, trying to wave Duo’s concern away, even though he still sounded like he was trying to impersonate a bullfrog. “Besides, I don’t get sick. I haven’t come down with so much as a cold in more than three years, I’m not going to get sick now.”

He was conveniently forgetting that he was on a planet now, with all the mutating germs that implied, and none of the vaccines one would need for that kind of travel because his colony had been registered as uninhabited.

“I was going to try to eat more, if you’re done trying to kill yourself with lightning.”

"..." Duo let his hand drop but his brows kitted in a frown, he didn't look happy at all.

"Just because you've not been sick in a while doesn't mean you're immune to it. You look and sound like shit, Wufei. You've caught a damn cold at least. But hey, what do I know?" He held his hands up and backed away, only to drop them a moment later and take himself into the kitchen.

There was no comment on the lightning, he didn't think it needed one.

"Soup fine with you?" Canned, he wasn't skilled enough to make his own from scratch, nor had money enough for those kinds of fresh produce. "What about grilled cheese? You had that before? Those two go together." And simple enough to make and easy on a sore throat. Though Duo belatedly realised that Wufei probably wouldn't eat it all so maybe just the soup?

He swallowed heavily when Duo just walked away like that, and followed behind him like a little duckling. He knew he owed Duo an apology, but he couldn’t quite bring himself to say it. The truth was, he was sick, and despite his considerable bravado, he was scared. He’d always had someone to tend to him when he’d been sick before, and he quite simply didn’t know how to handle it on his own.

“If you wish to go to the effort of making something new,” he agreed, slinking over to the table and sitting where he could watch Duo work. “I suppose, even if I’m not ill, taking a small dose of medication wouldn’t hurt.” He didn’t even know what kind of medicine to take. He knew how to treat broken bones and severed limbs and exposure to nerve gas, but a cold? Or whatever the hell this was? Completely clueless.

"Making something easy on your stomach's better than forcing you to eat something that'll make you sick." He reasoned. The soup he could make for Wufei. The stew he'd eat for himself. It didn't much bother him what he ate. Food was, generally, just something his body needed. He didn't much care for it one way or another. Though... there were exceptions. Pancakes, for one.

He went about getting out a can of soup and got it warming in a saucepan before he turned with a glass of water and some pills in hand. Duo didn't have any medicine really. Painkillers were good for a lot of things though. Helping bring down temperatures, easing aches and pains and headaches. They helped with several different kinds of symptoms.

"Take these. We'll see how bad things are after that." Since Duo wasn't really sure what it was either. All he knew was when someone got sick, he paid attention.

Wufei nodded in reply, draping himself over the table in an unusual show of laziness as his gaze followed Duo around the kitchen. He straightened up a little when Duo offered him the pills, taking them without question and chasing them with the water. "On my colony, most of our medication is herbal," they generally didn't resort to drugs until the herbs had failed, partly to conserve resources and partly because it was a cultural norm they'd brought with them to space.

He leaned over the table again, half-empty glass of water spinning slowly in his hand as he tried to focus his attention. His head was starting to ache again, in an entirely different way from the morning, and after a few minutes, he just pulled the glass close to press it to his forehead. "What kind of soup is it?" he asked, mostly to fill the silence that felt like it was clawing at him.

"Sorry, I don't really know herbal remedies." And he wasn't really certain those kinds of things could even work, though he wasn't about to voice that and disrespect Wufei's culture. Maybe if he hadn't been sick he would have teased him over it some, but Duo didn't think now was the right time for that.

He'd turned back to tend to the soup so it didn't burn when Wufei called over a question again.

"Uh... tomato, if that's alright? I can hit the store again in the morning and get a better range if it's not good enough." And maybe a pharmacy to get a meds that would actually work and help Wufei.

Wufei hummed when Duo said he didn't know herbal remedies, closing his eyes as Duo told him what kind of soup it was. "I've never had it, but I'm sure it'll be better than Kathy's," he managed a small smile at the memory, forcing himself to sit up so he could sip more of the water. "I think she might've put lion hair in it just to spite me."

He really was still feeling awful, and a little woozy. "Thank you," he added, quietly.
