The Walk Into A Bar Meme!

The bar's a comfortable place, where everyone knows you just have to walk up, give the bartender a smile, and order up a drink. Everyone goes to a bar sometime, whether to pick up a companion for the night, to pick up a friend, or pick up a drink. You never know the story behind the guy sitting next to you, or the bartender. But that's what bars are for, aren't they? To learn about the guy on the stool next to you, drinking his gin and tonic.

So what do you do in a Walk Into A Bar meme?

"Uh, hold on." Duo darted off and returned a few minutes later with Wufei's belongings. He set them by the bed with a grin and headed back out.

"Porridge good enough for you? It's no congee but it's bland enough. Come on down when you're ready." Duo called this over his shoulder and made his way back to the kitchen with a sad sort of feeling. He'd known that Wufei probably wouldn't have remembered, so it was fine. It was just unfortunate.

By the time Duo returned, Wufei had gathered the towel and used it to preserve his modesty as he sat up. "Thank you," he said, rubbing a hand down his face. "Porridge will be good," and if it came back up... At least it was bland.

When he was alone again, he took his time dressing, and eased his way down the stairs, eyes squinted mostly closed, following the scent of coffee to the kitchen and slouching onto a stool. He watched Duo for a few seconds before he finally spoke. "Did I really propose to you?" he asked, every word bouncing in his head like a very angry marble.

Duo had a mug of coffee already waiting and was just spooning porridge into a bowl when Wufei sat down and asked his question. He almost dropped the bowl when he burst out laughing.

"The hell?" he laughed some more and grabbed up the mug. Both were carried over to the table and set down, then painkillers fished from his pocket. The packet was placed by the coffee mug. "If it helps, I was a gentleman and rejected the offer until I was wined and dined. We didn't find the nearest Elvis impersonator to get hitched. You're still single." He held up his hand as proof. No ring.

He smiled a little at the reaction, snorting as he plucked up the packet of pain killers, even though the sound made him wince. "What a relief," he replied dryly, taking the pills and washing them down with coffee. "Saves us the trouble of getting an annulment when we're not even old enough to marry in this country, anyway," but he was thanking all his ancestors it was Duo who had found him. He had no doubt Duo was well versed in handling drunks and not taking anything they said too personally. "I expect you'll regale me with tales of my misdeeds and drunken ramblings, hmm?" he asked, and despite the hangover that soft smile from the night before was back, and pointed straight at Duo again.

Duo was all set to laugh it off when he caught sight of that smile. That... wasn't a smile a sober Wufei had ever given him. And it made him wonder if Wufei actually remembered or not...

He cleared his throat and straightened up to turn and go back to the stove. He spooned some of the porridge out for himself and took the few seconds with his back turned to Wufei to gather his wits. By the time he'd turned back to approach the table, his smile was firmly in place.

"Lets see..." Duo sat and grabbed up the syrup to add a little to the hot, steaming porridge. "There was the guy who bumped into the jukebox and accidentally started a song playing. You jumped up, cried that it was 'your jam' and got up on the bar to dance. I never realised you knew the Macarena!" He never lied, but he could spin a good tale. Littered with hints of the truth enough to sound convincing. "You know the whole proposal part so I'll skip that. I took you to eat after you painted the sidewalk with your stomach contents. You proposed to the waitress too. And the trucker at the counter." Duo sighed dramatically. "If I'd known you wanted a harem I woulda played more hard to get!"

He lifted a brow, nursing his coffee as he listened, chuckling as he set it down. "Hey, Macarena," he replied, taking his spoon and stirring his bowl of porridge. "I doubt I would've woken up quite so pleased with myself if all of that had actually happened," he pointed out. "Well, except the puking. I think I remember that," he wrinkled his nose, and took a bite. Thankfully, it went down without making him queasy, and the syrup had him letting out a happy hum. "What is that stuff?" he gestured with his spoon at the syrup. "It tastes familiar."

Duo stared for a second before he burst out laughing. He'd only been joking, of course, it was the first silly dance that had popped into his head. The fact that Wufei even knew the song was hilarious!

He ignored his own porridge in favour of planting his elbows on the table and cradling his chin in his hands.

"Syrup. You had it on pancakes and waffles last night. Seemed to like it then too." It might have been the reason he'd put more on the table this morning.

He managed a little smile when Duo laughed, quirking a brow as he found himself the center of attention. "It's very good, and extremely sweet," he agreed, taking another bite with a happy sound. "I'm glad my company was pleasant enough, I've never gotten drunk before," but he knew the chances were pretty good that he'd either be a delightful drunk to be around or a complete pain in the ass.

"Yeah, you weren't too bad. Just kinda wish it'd been under better circumstances." First time drunk should have been fun and with a friend. Not because of a bad mission. Though Duo hoped that, toward the end at least, he'd been able to give Wufei a little of that fun.

"How much do you remember...?" Duo had to ask. He didn't want to go and say something stupid or throw too much at Wufei too soon. But maybe he could help fill in some of the gaps?

He shrugged his shoulders. "I'd heart alcohol could make you forget an entire night, but it doesn't seem to have worked that way for me," he sighed, taking another bite as he mulled over the question while his skull throbbed away.

"Well, I remember you getting me out of the bar, and putting up with my terrible advances," he snorted softly, wincing as he did and following it with a swig of coffee. "With a great deal of grace. I remember vomiting, and after that..." he shrugged. "It's just a fog of pleasant feelings. Whatever we were doing, I was quite happy, but I can't remember anything more distinct than that."

"They weren't terrible..." He protested carefully. Duo had actually been flattered. And it had lead to something much more interesting happening.

"You were holding my hand." Duo clarified on that 'pleasant feeling', and he was smiling as he said it. A fond little smile of remembrance. "We talked. You didn't say anything embarrassing. But there was a good mood... I wouldn't let you have done anything you'd regret, Wufei."

He managed a soft chuckle as he ate, giving his head a little shake. "I know you wouldn't," he assured, even though his cheeks were pink from just the idea of holding hands. "And I don't," he added, just to be clear. Even if he couldn't remember holding Duo's hand, he certainly didn't think it was a bad thing.

"Thank you for taking care of me, and for making sure you were the one to do it," he shoveled some more porridge into his face, his body still fairly tense just from the pain throbbing away in his skull. "Have you gotten new orders yet?"

"My pleasure." Duo assured gently. He'd been doing his best to keep his voice low enough to not aggravate Wufei's poor head. He could tell from the way he brow wrinkled just how much he was hurting. So he moved away from the topic of memories and finally turned to his own porridge now it had cooled down some.

"I've been reliably informed things have been pushed back a week. Nothing new just yet. So you've plenty of time to... rest." And get over his hangover. Sleep was best, Duo thought. Hydration and sleep.

When Duo said there was nothing pressing, some of the tension eased out of his shoulders. "Good," he replied with a sigh. "I'm going to need it," even though the company and the food and the painkillers were all helping. He reached the bottom of his bowl, licking his spoon clean as he did. "I suppose this is one more mistake to cross off my bucket list, at least," he mused as he curled both hands around his coffee mug, and pulled it up for a sip, closing his eyes and letting the warmth soothe him. "Have you ever gotten black-out drunk?"

"I think... the mistake was how much you drank." And Duo blamed himself for that. If he'd gotten to Wufei a little sooner maybe he would have been able to pull him away sooner. But for the rest... "Yeah, a couple times. Always swear it'll never happen again." But it always does. Though he'd actually gotten better at it, the first time he'd drank in months was last night alongside Wufei. And even then it had only been a few drinks.

This line of work, it was so easy to fall into the bottom of a bottle to deal with everything. Duo refused.

"The mistake was choosing to drink that much on purpose," Wufei corrected with a little smile, and nodded in agreement. "Never again will be too soon, at least for getting hungover," he wouldn't say no to drinking again once in a while, he just wouldn't aim for 'blackout drunk'. "If I suspect you've gone off to crawl into a bottle, I'll return the favor and rescue you from yourself," he promised.

Duo was touched. The smile he gave Wufei was soft and grateful, he actually trusted those words. If Wufei said he would then he would. He just hoped he'd never give him cause to actually do that. Duo didn't want to end up down that path if he could help it. He liked to be in control a little too much to give in to that temptation.

"Thanks, pal. That means a lot. And just be lucky we don't have any missions right now. You can relax. I'd suggest more sleep. Just lemme know what you want for lunch and I'll have that ready for when you wake."

Oh, didn't that smile just start the butterflies up in his stomach? He felt his cheeks going warm with blush, and he returned the smile. "I'd count myself pretty damn lucky, considering," he agreed, sighing softly as he drained the rest of his coffee. "I think by then I'll be able to eat normally," so he'd do what he usually did and just eat whatever was left from what someone else had made. He wasn't very good at cooking most of the things that tended to be stocked in safe houses, especially outside Asia.

He eased out of his seat, taking bowl and mug over to the sink to give them both a rinse. "I think I will take your advice and lie down again." Even if he couldn't sleep, he might be able to meditate the hangover away.

"Just lemme know when you're ready." Duo was about to tell Wufei to just leave the dishes, but knew he probably would go ignored so he left it. Some battles just weren't worth fighting.

"Good. I might leave in a few. Track down a store and get some more supplies. I'll be back before you wake though." If they were going to be there a week, or a few days at least, depending on just how long Wufei could stand being around him, they'd need supplies. "Rest well, Wu."

"Okay," he replied with a little nod, leaving the actual washing for later, and pausing next to Duo, letting his gaze linger. "Thank you," again. He was turning into a broken record, but he didn't know how else to articulate what he was feeling. It was so... warm.

"You're more than welcome." Duo looked up and gave him a bright smile. Broken record or not, a little acknowledgment went a long way for someone like Duo. Not that he really did things just for that reason, but to know that Wufei happy with him enough to say that was a good feeling.

He smiled, nodded, and finally took himself and what was left of his head back upstairs to try to rest a little more. He knew the safe house was secure enough for him to sleep deeply, even with Duo going out to run errands. Duo never would've suggested going out while Wufei was asleep if it wasn't.

He didn't expect to get any more sleep, but just a few minutes after he laid down, he was out again, and when he roused a few hours later, he actually felt human again. He got up, brushed his teeth, and descended the stairs to check the security system, taking a look at what was actually in place and decide if he was going to rearrange furniture to do his forms, or if he could get away with doing them in the yard.

True to his word, not long after Wufei was asleep, Duo took stock of what they had in the safe house and what they'd need, grabbed the car keys and headed out. He hit three different stores but was back before an hour had even passed. Duo was efficient when he wanted to be and, really, he didn't want to leave Wufei alone for too long. Even if the house was as safe as could be, Duo didn't feel right leaving the other pilot when he was in a vulnerable state.

After he returned and unpacked all the food, he started prep for a simple stew. Something that he could slow cook for a while or reheat if Wufei ended up sleeping the day away. Something tasty, filling but easy enough on the stomach. Duo had given it a great deal of thought, not that he'd admit to it. And he actually kind of liked cooking. Again, not that he'd admit to it. If he did the guys would make him cook a lot more than he actually did. But it was often assumed that he couldn't cook. A kid living on the streets, obviously he wouldn't have a clue.

He was sat at the kitchen table sipping a cooling cup of tea when he heard movement. Duo didn't get up though, he just waited to see if Wufei was just going to the bathroom or not. When he heard the other actually coming down, Duo smile and finished off his tea before he ventured out into the living room.

"How're you feeling? Better?"

Wufei had taken another shower, and came down looking a great deal better. "Significantly," he agreed, padding into the living room and having a look around. "Do you mind if I move things?" He'd decided that going outside to practice was a little too risky, especially with whatever he'd done the night before possibly drawing some attention to the fact that a young, Asian teen was around and getting into some form of trouble.

"Good." He leaned against the door jam, arms crossed over his chest and a smile on his lips. Wufei was looking better now. More awake. The little signs of pain had eased away some. The rest really had done him good and Duo was happy for that.

"Sure, move whatever you like." It didn't bother him, he'd go back into the kitchen and give Wufei the space he needed to do whatever he wanted.
