He nodded numbly, sinking into the sofa and letting it ease some of the tension out of him. It took a minute for his mind to track the conversation properly, so while Duo was in the midst of fixing that hot cocoa, he realized something mildly alarming.

"Do people think I'm sleeping with her?" Somewhere between shock, horror, and unmistakable disgust. He liked Sally, he did, but certainly not like that.

"Uh... no?" Duo replied weakly, realising his error in his assumption.

"So who was the lucky guy then?" He called over his shoulder, trying for a different approach.

He let out a sigh of relief. "Someone named Jacob. An analyst working out of Brussels," he replied, happy to shift the focus. "He's nice, very boring, reliable. He'll make a good father."

He swallowed hard, rubbing the heels of his hands at his eyes. "Handsome enough that she teased me about being jealous," he snorted.

"Jealous he got her not you? Kinda harsh..." He didn't think Sally was that cruel. She had a sharp tongue and a wicked sense of humour, it was one of the things Duo had liked about her. But he'd never figured her as a nasty kind of person.

Duo returned to the front room with a mug in hand. The mug was a gift. The mug had pictures of parrots on it. He'd once seen a parrot and had been so enamoured by it that he'd spent days and days watching parrot videos and had seriously contemplated buying one. Until he realised they were hard work. A friend had gotten him the mug instead. Which he now handed to Wufei with a grin. "Careful. It's hot."

Wufei flushed darkly, huffing out a laugh. And here he thought he'd been as easy to read as a book. "Jealous of her," he corrected with a shake of his head.

He accepted the mug with both hands, cradling it like something precious and fragile. "Thank you," he said, gazing into the chocolate. He blew on it, then sipped it as reverently as any tea, letting out another long sigh of relief as the warmth seeped through him. "What's in this?" he asked, his eyes closed as he savored it.

"... You liked the guy too?" No judgement, it took all sorts. Maybe a little subtle surprise because hadn't Wufei been married? Though, again, that lead straight back to 'all sorts'. Being married didn't much mean anything, but if Wufei liked guys too he'd kept it under wraps. Not like Quatre's out and proud approach at least.

"Hot chocolate. Just a packet mix but I add a bit extra syrup and cream." Duo smiled happily, pleased that Wufei's refined pallet had accepted his humble drink. He sat himself down beside Wufei and reached for his own. No longer a hot chocolate but a warm one but still he'd drink it. Even if it had gone ice cold he'd drink it. Waste wasn't something Duo much approved of. "Helps me relax. Hoped maybe it'd help you too."

"A little," Wufei conceded. "He had dimples." Apparently, Wufei liked dimples, and gazing into mugs of hot cocoa as he contemplated life. "I've given up on having that, though. Relationships. I'm a bit too," he hummed as he paused, like he had to think up the right phrasing, "fucked up."

Despite his better judgement, he was relaxing, feeling himself finally starting to drift in the direction of at least a nap. "It's not like I'd know how to do it, anyway. Nataku and I never got along, not until it was too late, and that was arranged. No need to impress her, or even pretend that I gave a shit about any of it. I didn't even stay for the whole wedding," he snorted. "I was a stubborn little shit." Still was, by all accounts.

He couldn't help it, he laughed.

"Dimples is what gets your motor running, huh? Fair enough. Everyone's got their thing." Then he laughed again. Wufei swearing was always amusing to him. "We're all fucked up. Doesn't mean we don't deserve a slice of what others have. You just need to find the right pair of dimples for you."

Duo sipped at his hot chocolate and listened to the rest of what Wufei had to say. It was so rare for him to talk about his wife. So whenever he did, Duo always paid attention. It was a strange thing to hear about, arranged marriages were one thing, but they'd been so young. How could they possibly have been able to get along?

"You were a kid." Duo pointed out. "It'd probably be different if you were old enough to know what the fuck was going on. But what does a little kid know about love and marriage?"

He chuckled, too, sipping at his cocoa and humming in agreement. "Oh, I thought I knew everything, but so did she," and they hadn't stopped squabbling until the Alliance showed up, trying to kill them all. He sighed heavily, gazing into his mug again like it held all the answers he needed in its chocolatey depths. "You know what's really fucked up? They had her eggs. After she'd died, they saved her ovaries, wanted me to raise her children if I survived the war," but they'd been destroyed with the rest of the colony.

Or so he hoped. There could be an intact canister floating out in space somewhere, still preserved. The idea made his stomach churn. "That's another nightmare scenario I didn't need to give myself," he grumbled, and downed the rest of the cocoa like it was liquor.

"... That's fucked up." All humour was gone then and without really meaning to, Duo had reached out a hand to rest it on Wufei's in what he hoped was a comforting gesture.

"Listen, don't think about that, right? Easier said than done I know. But that shit is so far beyond your control it's not even worth considering." And he was sorry. Because he kind of thought Wufei would make a great dad. But he kept that to himself for now, not sure if saying so would upset him more.

He looked up when Duo touched him, blinking slowly like he couldn't quite process what was happening. He sighed softly, his cheeks dusting pink as he turned his hand over for Duo, setting his mug aside as he tried not to think too much about the feel of Duo's callouses. "What should I think about?" Because everything that popped into his mind was exactly wrong right now.

He'd not quite expected Wufei to react like that to his touch, but it was done now so... Duo went ahead and curled his fingers around the hand, giving it a gentle squeeze.

"Anything! You've gotta have a happy memory in that head of yours. Find it. Think about that. Or... or I was gonna watch a movie before turning in, sit and watch it with me. Switch off your thoughts and just forget about everything bothering you." Duo grinned. "You're safe here, Wu."

For some reason, that just made the pink in his cheeks get even darker. He grunted softly, letting his fingers curl around Duo's hand in return. "A movie sounds good," even if it meant letting go of the hand in his.

He let his mind wander, to a memory that wasn't exactly happy, but one that sometimes soothed the pain in his chest when he was busy feeling sorry for himself.

He gave the hand another little squeeze before he took it back and reached for the tv control. Duo was in a relatively good mood, and given how stressed Wufei was, he didn't bring attention to that blush. Embarrassing Wufei when he was down wasn't on Duo's list of priorities right then.

"You've a preference on the kinda movie you wanna watch?" Honestly, Duo was easy when it came to watching tv. He'd watch anything! "Or is action comedy good enough?"

He shrugged when Duo grabbed the remote. "Do you have one of the old Jackie Chan movies?" They seemed like something Duo would enjoy, and Wufei knew he'd enjoy seeing the unusual application of martial arts. At least until he nodded off, hopefully for a few hours.

Duo grinned. "You bet I do!" Old movies were one of his guilty pleasures. Martial arts movies were something he really enjoyed as well. It would be fun to actually share one of those movies with someone else so he was quick to cue it up before Wufei changed his mind.

Once he'd hit play, Duo settled back. Then up again and darted off to hit the overhead lights, turning them off in favour of switching on a lamp instead. Then he settled back down beside Wufei.

He couldn't help smiling at Duo's enthusiasm, too tired to keep his guard up like he normally might. "He seems like your kind of warrior, very unconventional," he chuckled as the lights were switched for a lamp.

The warmth of the cocoa, and of Duo's company, and the background noise of the movie, all conspired to drag him off to sleep not fifteen minutes into the movie. Not the light sleep that he normally resorted to, when he was able to wake within seconds from the slightest disturbance. No, this was a sound, deep, trusting sleep. It would take an MS landing on the damn building to wake him up like this.

And as he did, he slouched, sliding just a tiny smidge at a time, until he was using Duo's shoulder for a pillow.

It didn't take long at all before Wufei began to drift off. Duo went ahead and covertly turned the volume down a little as it happened, silly loud enough for him to enjoy the movie of course. Just low enough it wouldn't wake Wufei up if there was a sudden explosion or something.

To his amusement he soon found Wufei on his shoulder. An affectionate smile curved his lips as he held himself still for a little while. In the end he knew this was probably not the best position for either of them, so he pulled the cushion out from his side and set it down on his lap. As carefully as he could he moved Wufei to gently lower his head down onto that cushion. Then he reached over to pull the snuggy around him a bit more. It wasn't nearly as good as a blanket but it would do for now.

When he was satisfied with what he'd done, he let a hand rest upon Wufei's shoulder and returned to watching the movie.

The only reaction the movement got was a little sigh as his head settled on the pillow, a little nuzzle to it as one of his arms came up, draping over Duo's legs. He slept soundly, the only sign of dreams an occasional twitch in his brow or at the edge of his lips.

It wasn't until the movie ended that he woke, brow furrowing a little as he shifted himself into a more comfortable position, eyes cracking open just a hair. "Mmh?" He reached up with a tired hand, yanking the band out of his hair and letting it fall free. He couldn't remember where he was or why, but he was safe and comfortable, and he'd finally gotten some damn sleep. Now was not the time for questions.

At any sign that Wufei was about to wake, Duo would hush him back to sleep. Absently he'd even started to lightly move his thumb over his friends shoulder, slowly and without much thought to the action. He really wasn't paying attention to much but the movie.

At least until it finished, then he had to decide whether he should move of not. Of course, in the end, Duo decided that a near sleepless night was going to be easier for him to deal with than waking Wufei up, so he went about looking for another movie to keep him awake. Then Wufei moved. Duo froze, worrying he'd done too much and woken him. But to his surprise, instead of getting up, his friend just went and pulled the tie from his hair instead. Duo was confused... and just a little enchanted by the act. He'd only ever caught Wufei with his hair down the once when he had just gotten out of a shower.

It was so silky and dark, a shadow against the cushion on his lap. Duo's fingers itched to touch but he forced himself not to do anything so weird and creepy to his sleeping friend!

The band slid onto a pair of Wufei's fingers, in a motion that was born of habit more than consciousness. He hummed again, mind warring between going right back to sleep because he needed it, and rousing enough to get into a proper bed, or at least stop preventing Duo from getting to his own. In the end, Duo being so still was enough to convince his sleepy brain that staying put was just fine, and his eyes drifted closed again as he let out a long sigh. What little tension had rolled up into him as he woke faded away again, and he was out like a light once more.

If Wufei had woken enough to argue the case, Duo might well have taken Wufei to his room and let him rest in an actual bed. But by the same token, Duo was a little afraid that by waking up he might have trouble sleeping again. This was the best outcome. He was comfortable enough. He even took the moment that Wufei was awake up carefully lift his legs and prop his feet up on the table in front of him. Duo was as relaxed and comfortable as he could possibly be. And if his friend was the same, that was all that mattered.

He'd watch another movie. Maybe try and catch a nap sat where he was. He'd slept in worse places than this so that wasn't an issue. What the problem was... was that Duo was afraid to sleep, just in case Wufei had a nightmare and he wasn't there to help him through it. So he did his best to remain awake. He could get a few hours in the morning once he was sure his friend was okay.

It wasn't until the early hours that the nightmare came. Tension built in his shoulders rather quickly, face scrunching as he navigated his imagined battlefield, and just a few seconds after that he woke with a gasp, whole body tense as he struggled to get his bearings and remember where he was, how he'd gotten there.

He'd not fallen asleep, but half way through the third movie he'd attempted to watch Duo had begun to drift off. His eyes had closed. It was the lightest of dozes so, when Wufei became agitated, Duo was already reacting.

"Wufei." He called his friends name once his eyes were open and the hand that had remained upon Wufei's shoulder gave a slight, reassuring squeeze. "It's okay. You're fine. You're safe here. It's just a bad dream." Duo did his best to keep his voice soothing even as he leaned forward and brought his other hand into play to softly stroke over his hair. It was just as silky as he'd imagined it would be...

Almost immediately, he started relaxing again, letting out his breath in a sigh as he lifted a hand to rub at his eyes. Still, despite the nightmare, he felt worlds better. "Thank you," he said, voice still thick with sleep. "How long?"
