He'd not bothered to remove his hand. Honestly had kind of forgotten where it was at all until Wufei's fingers curled around his to hold it. Only then did his attention shift to their hands with a mild look or surprise. Then a smile. It didn't bother him really. A little strange but Wufei didn't seem to mind it so he wouldn't.

"WWDD." The smile was a grin now. "What Would Duo Do? They want you to show it, pile on the sugar until you make em so dam uncomfortable they beg you to go back to the old Wufei!" And yet, even as he said the words, he burst out laughing. The thought of a sugary sweet Wufei was just a little disturbing. Clearly he was more than capable of being sweet... But Quatre levels of sweet just looked damn weird on anyone but the little blonde.

The whole situation was strange. Wufei didn't, generally speaking, get affectionate with anyone, but this wasn't a normal situation. This was quiet, and private, and more than just knowing he was safe, he felt it.

Then Duo had to go and suggest that, and he was laughing, too. "You know, that might just work," he said with a grin. "But you'll have to come with me and record it, or no one will believe I ever did it. I'd be blushing the whole time, too. My people don't really show affection except behind closed doors," like right here, on Duo's couch, with their fingers mingling together. It was doing strange things to his chest, but he didn't mind it at all.

"You really want somethin like that recorded? You're a braver man than me, Wu!" But he'd do it if Wufei truly wanted him to. If just so he could look back on it and cringe or show it as proof why he was the way he was and not a sugar coated bag of feels!

"Seems kind of... lonely." Not showing affection. Duo had pretty much craved it most of his life, though he'd never understood what it was he wanted. Not until Sister Helen. The first instance of affection had come from her and he'd fallen for her hard. He would have done anything for her. For a smile or a kind word. Though more often than not what he ended up doing was getting beaten up or just being a general menace. She'd still been kind to him.

After her... affection had been something he'd hoped to get once the war ended. Quatre had been an affectionate little shit and he'd loved that about him. If there was ever a time Duo had needed a hug, Quatre was on hand.

But affection from Wufei? That was just unheard of. Until now.

"Hey... Wu? Why did you come here?" He asked slowly, his gaze still on their joined hands.

"Well, then no one will ever ask me to do it again," he pointed out, his grin fading to a small smile. "It is lonely, a little, but it's all I've ever known," he admitted softly.

That question, though, that had his face going back to it's usual mildly indifferent expression as he decided just how to reply, what the right words were. His fingers brushed against Duo's, an attempt at reassurance as he took his time picking out his reply.

His gaze was on Duo's ceiling when he finally answered, voice barely a whisper. "You don't look at people like they're broken when they come to you for help." There was nothing he hated more than pity, and he knew he wouldn't get it here. "I knew I'd feel safer here than anywhere else I could go, and that maybe it would help," and it had. Despite his words, he couldn't bring himself to meet Duo's gaze.

Duo could understand that. Being alone. Hadn't most of them? It was why he'd been so thrilled when he'd met the other Gundam pilots. Brothers in arms and all that. He'd expected they'd all end up that way. As close as brothers... That hadn't really happened though.

While Wufei looked up, Duo's eyes were on the way the others fingers moved against his own. It tingled a little, made his fingertips itch and he wanted to rub them. He almost did that by stroking his own fingers against Wufei's hand, until Wufei spoke.

"... Because you're not broken, Wu. You're just havin a hard time and..." Duo sighed and gave a low huff of laughter. "You're safe here. And welcome any time. Doors always open, like I said. If I can help you know I will. I guess I just didn't realise you thought I was safe. Not many people'd agree with you there."

He hummed softly, letting his gaze drift back to meet Duo's again, sighing softly. "Safer than anyone else," he replied with a shrug. "Heero wouldn't understand, Trowa might, but I doubt he would have been particularly helpful with it, and Quatre," he grimaced slightly. "Never tell Quatre you require assistance with anything." He'd done it, once, for something that wasn't a mission. He was still regretting it.

"But you," Wufei sighed, let his fingers brush against Duo's again. He didn't know what the right words were, that would strike the balance between honesty and embarrassment, so he shrugged instead. "I'll probably come back in a couple of days," before it got so bad that he was practically dead on his feet again. "Do you want me to move, so you can go get some sleep?" He sincerely hoped Duo didn't need to work.

"Yeah, don't do that..." Quatre was... a sweet guy and a good friend, but he was a bit too much. How Trowa dealt with him on the daily, Duo could never understand.

"You're expecting to keep havin these bad dreams, huh?" Duo asked quietly, not sure why he'd thought one night would have fixed everything, but understanding that wasn't the case only really left him with one option. "Well now you're gonna regret askin me for help, Wuffie. You think I'm just gonna let you go off and wait here days till you show up on my doorstep looking like a zombie again? No damn way! You get to go home or work or wherever, pack yourself a bag and get your ass back here. You're staying till you've worked out the mess in your head enough you can sleep alone again."

His first reaction was both immediate and involuntary, as all the blood in his body seemed to rush straight up to his face, maybe down his neck a little. There was absolutely no mistaking it, with his eyes widening a little, mouth dropping open slightly as he tamped down his knee-jerk reaction to simply refuse. His jaw worked a few times as he tried to convince his voice to work again, but when he managed to find it, all he could get out was an almost pathetic little "okay."

He wasn't stupid. It was a good idea and he knew it, even though every ounce of propriety in his body was currently screaming in horror. Another part of himself was not-so-quietly hoping the nightmares never stopped, but he wasn't going to examine that too closely. Duo was just being Duo, taking care of the people who mattered to him and the thought had his cheeks darkening, just a little more. He cleared his throat. "I, ah. Have to work today, in a couple hours. But I'll come back after." It was as good as a promise.

That... was most definitely a reaction. And not the one Duo had expected. He'd half expected to have to argue with Wufei over this some, but he hadn't imagined that it would start with a massive blush and then a quiet agreement. Duo was lost for words. Until he laughed.

"Good. Time enough for me to get this place in order. And catch a few hours sleep too." He'd sleep while Wufei was working, it was simple enough. Then he'd go out and hunt down that tea.

He sent up a silent prayer of thanks that Duo hadn't commented on the blush, smiling a little as Duo laughed. "If Sally figures out I'm staying with you, she's going to inundate you with questions," he warned, reluctantly sitting up and letting go of Duo's hand, even though he could've stayed there all day holding it over his heart.

"... Why? She never see two dudes cohabitating before?" He maintained his grin even as Wufei sat up, but there was an odd feeling of disappointment when he did. Duo had gotten used to it, and the hand in his. Though now he was free of Wufei's weight he realised once more than one of his legs had fallen asleep, and tried to subtly move his foot to ease it back awake.

"If I get cornered, what do I say?" He asked curiously. "What story have you told people about the whole zombie thing?" Because Duo knew damn well and good people would have noticed the bags under Wufei's eyes.

"I'm fairly certain she thinks I would kill anyone I share space with for more than twelve hours," he replied dryly.

The question had him wincing a little, blush roaring back to life on his cheeks because, as lies went, this was a pretty big one, for him. "I may have insinuated that Yuy and I were competing to see who could stay awake longer. Without notifying him."

"..." Duo stared. He had... what?

Soon he was laughing. Laughing so hard there were tears in his eyes. Heero had no idea? This was amazing! Amazingly dumb, but amazing all the same!

"And what... what happens... when someone asks him?" He asked once he'd caught some breath to speak, but still couldn't help laughing. "That's gonna backfire on you hard once he finds out!"

Wufei couldn't help smiling as he looked over at Duo. "Well, that's how he finds out I've beat his record," he replied lightly. "His longest is seven days, but I hit ten before I turned up here like a stray cat." He just hoped that Heero's competitive streak would outweigh his irritation, and then Heero would be too miserable to bother coming after him.

Or they'd just fight which, honestly, Wufei had always wanted to do. Even if it would land him in medical for a week.

"Don't do it again." Duo replied lightly. "Going that long without sleep? You know that's a form of torture, right?" One Duo was well acquainted with. He pulled a face and then eased himself up off of the sofa. When he did, one eye closed as he gave his right leg a little shake.

"Next time... We'll take the bed. I don't mind you sleepin in my lap, Wufei. But the whole right side from my ass to my toes fell asleep. And it's weird as hell feeling it all wake back up again."

"Had I not been aware before, I would be now," he replied with a weak smile, giving his head a shake. "But now I have a solution that has worked at least once, so with any luck I won't have to," as long as Duo didn't get fed up and kick him out again.

And maybe it was stupid, letting himself get moved in and comfortable, when this was clearly just something temporary, to handle a temporary problem, but after what he'd just put himself through he didn't have the willpower to deny himself this tiny little sliver of what he found himself wishing for. He chuckled at Duo's comment on the bed, nodding in agreement. "I don't recall falling asleep there, but it wasn't a terrible way to wake up," he was blushing again as he got to his feet, pulled his bag off the floor and onto his shoulder.

"We'll find out if was a one-off or not tonight. Hopefully it'll work again! If not..." Duo shrugged and flashed a grin. "If not we'll find another way. You've got me in your corner now, Wu. I'll do what I can to help." He was sure together they'd find a way to fix whatever was broken, one way or another.

Though he was starting to wonder about what kept making Wufei blush. He'd done it more in the last few hours than Duo had ever remembered him doing in the past.

It wasn't because... Nah, nah there was no way. Duo almost laughed at where his own thoughts were trying to take him.

"You didn't fall asleep there." Duo chuckled. "You fell asleep on my shoulder. I moved you there. Thought it'd be more comfortable. Guess it was a good call!"

Duo in his corner. Just the idea had a little smile playing at his lips as he turned to give Duo a shallow bow. "Thank you, and it was. My apologies for your discomfort," but surely tonight would be better.

More awkward, undoubtedly, but better. "I'll be back after work, around six o'clock, if nothing comes up," but he had Duo's number, and he'd ensure Duo was appraised of any changes. He hesitated for a long second, just looking at Duo before nodding, and heading for the door.

As promised, at six on the nose he knocked at Duo's door, a duffle that was slightly larger than the bag the night before hanging from his shoulder. Clothes, toiletries, a few weapons. Just the essentials, plus a bamboo tube stuffed with compressed discs of Puerh tea, just in case Duo hadn't been able to find any.

Duo waved him off. There was no reason to apologise for his ass falling asleep. He could have done something about that if he'd really wanted, but it was his own choice to remain sat where he was rather than disturb Wufei. Wufei had not asked him nor forced him. So nothing to apologise for!

"I'll be here." Duo promised, he was all smiles before showing Wufei out and wishing him a fun day at work.

It was only after Wufei had left and the door was closed that Duo lost some of his smile. He didn't know what was wrong with hid old friend but that was something they could work on. It hurt him that Wufei was suffering this much. But this was all Duo could do to help, for now. Offer his home and his bed, give Wufei a safe place to sleep at night. It was something that Duo had always wished for himself, many years ago...

He yawned and took himself to bed then, and was asleep almost as soon as his head hit his pillow.

Later on he was up, showered, cleaned and had even gone shopping. Unlucky for him he hadn't been able to find the tea... But he had managed to find some online that he'd sent for. He'd been sat on the sofa with his laptop when there was a knock. Checking the time, he grinned. Laptop aside, he hopped to his feet and hurried off to let Wufei in.

"Punctual. Love it. Come on in, Wufei!"

He was far more nervous than he had any reason to be, smiling as Duo welcomed him in and bowed slightly. "Duo," he said warmly as he stepped inside. "Haven't changed your mind?" He was half-teasing, half worried Duo was going to cold clock him with a punch or had simply changed his mind. He'd been ruminating on their morning awkwardness all day, and tiredness had seeped back into his bones right around lunch time. "Thank you," he added, just for good measure.

"Haven't changed my mind." Duo assured him with a grin and closed the door behind Wufei. When he turned back he held out his hands for the bag his friend carried. "I can take that for you? Can put it away in..." And here he trailed off, head cocking to the side. "Actually I meant to ask, sleeping arrangements. I've a spare room you can have. But if it's company you need, my beds big enough for us both."

Here Duo gave a gesture for Wufei to follow him. He figured it was better to iron out the details now instead of worrying about them later when they were half asleep.

"Then we can think about food. Unless you've eaten already? How was work anyway?" Duo was happily chatting along as he lead Wufei through to his bedroom. The room was lit by a lamp at the side of the bed. The bed was a double, neatly made with a body pillow laying across the bottom of the bed. There were no pictures on the walls, nothing much to personalise the room other than a selection of hair ties on the chest of drawers beside a handgun. There was, however, hidden away beside that chest of drawers, there was a CD player and a small stack of CDs.

Wufei handed off the bag, only because politeness dictated that he let Duo settle him in, and followed the other pilot deeper into the apartment. "Ah, I'm not certain," he admitted, a little kernel of dread settling into his chest. "We can start by trying whichever arrangement is more comfortable for you," which he assumed was the guest room, but there was a small chance Duo would prefer to share the bed when there was a stranger in his apartment.

Well, maybe stranger was the wrong word, but he didn't have a better one. "I've not eaten yet," he replied with a little smile, gaze wandering over the bedroom as he followed Duo inside. "I thought I might pay for delivery tonight," a way to express his gratitude and carry his own weight. "Work was... interesting. Sally attempted to interrogate me all day, and I suspect she's called Heero. He's coming down later this week," and Wufei was expecting to get his ass handed to him upon Heero's arrival.

"Take out'd be good." With the bag in hand, Duo carried it to the left side of the bed and set it down near the table with the lamp. Then he dropped down onto the bed with a grin. "Don't worry bout me, Wufei. It's about you and your comfort levels. That's why I asked. Sleeping next to me helped you last night, so just wondered if it was contact or proximity that was the factor. Knowing someone's around or needing the tactile sensation to settle the nightmares. And for the record I don't mind either. Wouldn't have told you to stay if it was an issue." Now that he'd cleared the air there, he thought about the rest of what Wufei had said.

Sally getting involved was an issue, but Heero getting involved was more of one.

"I could intercept him? Cut it off before it becomes a thing? Less stress on you the better... As for Sally. Does being pregnant make you nosy?" He laughed cheerfully. "Next time tell her to mind her own business. You're fine. You're staying with me."

He nodded, letting his gaze drift over the bed as he listened, took a moment to internally argue with himself about ulterior motives and what he really did need. "Then let's try in here first. I suspect the physical contact was integral," it had certainly made the waking up less traumatic, even if it hadn't entirely prevented the nightmares.

He shook his head at Duo's question about Heero. "It's fine, I can handle Heero, and Sally has always been nosy when it comes to me," he replied dryly. "She thinks I'm her responsibility or something."

If Duo had any ulterior motives he wasn't letting on. His smile remained, his expression open and friendly. He was hoping to help Wufei, not make his life worse. Duo understood those sleepless nights, having had many of them himself. Sometimes he wished he'd thought to ask one of the others for help, but hadn't thought any of them would have been willing back then. Aside from maybe Quatre. Qutare would have been a gem and would have wrapped around him if he'd asked. But would also have hounded him for the rest of his life worrying. It was easier to deal on his own...

Or buy a body pillow.

"You've got a handle on it then, that's great. How about you order food and get a shower, then we'll settle for the evening? Order whatever you want. I'll eat most anything!" He blinked and then laughed. "So long as I can name it. Ordered something once that sounded interesting. Turned out it was blood tofu. Learned that day there are things even I won't eat!"
