Wufei chuckled into his slice, taking another bite as he mulled it over. It was nice, standing here in the kitchen, a little closer than was perhaps socially acceptable, but it was just the two of them, and Duo seemed quite comfortable with it. "In those days I didn't know much about you," Wufei pointed out. "As far as I knew you were just ill-mannered nobility; I assumed we all were upper class. I met Trowa first and had no reason to assume he wasn't actually a Barton. Quatre's surname is plastered on half the known universe, and Heero's code-name was quite literally plucked from Treize's family tree," he pointed out around his bite, lifting a hand to cover his mouth so Duo wouldn't have to see him talking around his food. "Why would I expect you to be anything else?"

Duo went and choked on his pizza. He had to put the plate and slice down as he coughed into his hand.

Him? A noble? Was there any damn thing that had suggested 'nobility'? If anyone had accused him of it when he was younger Duo would have taken offence. It had been an almost dirty word to him. As if someone like him could have his name uttered in the same breath as all those other fancy names. His name wasn't even technically his own.

His eyes had watered now he'd finished coughing and he reached back for a kitchen towel to dab at them.

"Shit, Wu... Dunno how to process that!" His voice was a little rougher, a little deeper and had to clear his throat a few times. "Think... think you're probably the only one who thought that. Glad you never told me though. I was a little shit back then, I'd have punched you." Then cheerfully explained that he was as far from nobility as you could get.

Wufei chuckled as Duo choked on his pizza, and if he looked a little smug, well, it wasn't easy to get that kind of reaction out of someone like Duo. "I probably am, I spent too much time in my own head back then and not enough bothering to confirm assumptions," he agreed lightly. "I did realize very quickly that bringing it up was a bad idea," but he'd just assumed Duo's family was... unpleasant. Again with the assumptions.

But that sparked an idea, and the grin he turned on Duo was downright feral. "You like drinking games, don't you?"

"Bad idea." Duo agreed. With the chip he'd had on his shoulder, bringing up the class divide at the wrong time would have ended up in a scuffle of gundanium proportions.

That grin though... Duo actually leaned away from it a touch, eyeing Wufei with a great deal of suspicion. "Yeah..." He answered guardedly, sizing his friend up. "... You don't know drinking games." He tried for haughty but it came out teasing. Whatever, he was trying not to laugh now. Wufei had successfully changed the subject and Duo was highly amused by the direction.

Wufei gave an arrogant sniff. "I work in law enforcement, drinking games are practically mandatory," though with his metabolism and bolstered resistance to alcohol they were rarely ever fair. "Since it seems I've made many wrong assumptions about you, and we both know I'm a bit too good at keeping things to myself, I think we might be able to have a little fun with it."

Yes. Him. Chang Wufei. Talking about having fun. Hell was freezing over yet again. "We take turns stating assumptions we've made about the other. If the assumption is wrong, the person asking has to take a drink. If it's right, the other person does." It was simple, but all the best drinking games were. "Though I suppose that does rely upon my assumption that you've got some alcohol stashed around here."

Hell was already a cold and dark place in Duo's opinion. But if this was going to happen, then that was fine with him. Duo grinned and slid off of the counter and took the few steps to the opposite counter and opened the bottom cupboard. Inside was where he kept his booze. With a grin he stepped to the side and made a gesture for Wufei to take a look.

"Pick your poison. I'm game." Inside the cupboard was where he kept all his bottled spirits. Usually whiskey, some novelty flavours, a couple bottles of wine and vodka. Most were actually unopened still. "Some beer in the fridge."

"If we start with beer, we might never get drunk," Wufei pointed out, coming over to the cupboard and crouching down to pluck out a bottle of whiskey, handing it up to Duo and snagging a couple shot glasses while he was there. "And since I've already put my foot in my mouth, you can start us off," he suggested as he straightened up.

"Good point." Though a nice, cold beer went better with pizza than whiskey did. At least Wufei hadn't grabbed one of the weirder flavours he had in there.

With the bottle in hand, Duo grabbed up his pizza and took his laughing ass off into the living room. If he was going to get plastered he was going to do it in comfort.

"When'd you put your foot in your mouth?" He called back before dropping onto the sofa. "Ohh, you mean the whole thinkin I was some asshole rich kid with no manners who was sent to war to teach him to be humble? Hah yeah I'll give you that one. But y'know, this is gonna be a short game. I don't have many assumptions about you. But I could make a bunch up." See if he could get a laugh out of Wufei. Now that was a challenge Duo was up for.

Wufei piled a couple more slices onto his plate before following Duo out to the living room, snorting softly as he set it down. "Well, I'm sure you've heard your share of rumors about me, even if you're not working directly with Preventers," he pointed out. "You can use some of those. And I'll do the same when I run out," he lowered next to Duo, filling both shot glasses and taking another bite from his pizza as he waited for Duo's first question.

"Don't usually listen to rumours." Duo took up his shot glass and examined it for a moment, biding his time while he picked through all the things he knew about Wufei or thought he knew. If he was honest, he wasn't all that happy to learn things this way. He liked when information came to him naturally. But Wufei seemed to want to do this and even seemed to find it fun, which in itself amused Duo.

"Always thought you didn't know what a sense of humour was. That you'd deliberately shattered your funny bone when you were a kid and practiced that scowl in the mirror until you'd got it down to perfection. You'd always glare when I laughed. So... really didn't think you knew how to laugh! Why was that?" He pulled some cheese off of his pizza. "We'd all had a shit time of it. But were you really that grumpy when I'd laugh?"

Wufei quirked a brow at that, but didn't say anything as he waited for Duo's question, chuckling softly as he did. "The truth?" he hesitated, glancing down at his shot glass. "I was feeling a great number of things I didn't understand, doing things that were entirely out of character for me, prior to my wife's death. You were confusing, and I worried you might distract me from what I thought was my ultimate destiny: Dying at Khushrenada's hand." And just for good measure, or maybe to take the edge off his nerves, he tossed the shot back and poured himself another.

He leveled his gaze on Duo. "You don't listen to rumors, but you do hear them, don't you? I assume you're more connected than any of us to what sort of thoughts are swirling around in the darker corners of humanity."

They all were feeling things. Duo had still been wrapped up in the Maxwell Church Massacre but had tried his damn best to connect with everyone. But had been made to feel like the biggest pain in the ass. And because he was more than capable of biting his nose off to spite his face, he'd played up to their expectations of him more often than not.

"That's fair. Guess I was 'a bit much', huh?" Duo gave a low laugh and tore at his pizza, popping the pieces into his mouth to chew thoughtfully.

"Bad assumption, Wufei." He gave him a lopsided grin. "Why would I care about the 'dark corners of humanity'? Had enough darkness in my life. I don't go seeking it out." Not these days anyway. "I've heard a few things... Take you and Sally. Always thought you guys'd end up shacked up. Why'd you let an amazing woman like that slip by you?"

"A bit," Wufei agreed with a chuckle, and tossed back the shot when his assumption was proven wrong, following it with a bite of pizza that he nearly choked on when Duo suggested he was with Sally, of all people. "Sally?" he asked, as if Duo had managed to grow a second head while he wasn't looking.

Then again, as assumptions went, it wasn't so far out there. He shook his head a little. "I suppose equal parts disinterest and cowardice, with a large helping of social inadequacy," he offered lamely. "Why did you think I'd want to date her? Because she's the only one who can put up with me?" He smirked, but he was blushing, too.

"Partly that." Duo agreed and knocked back his own shot. He'd known his assumption had been wrong but his curiosity over why had forced him to ask. "She seemed your type? Strong, independent, and yeah, more than capable of kickin you into line. Not the only one who thought it either. Kinda amazed just how wrong I was was. Usually good at this!"

He chuckled at that, pouring them both refills of whiskey. "I suppose, if she were a man she would be," he kept his gaze on the drink, managed through sheer force of will not to blush. "I suppose I'm harder to read than I thought. Sally seemed to pick up on it quickly enough."

"I figured it was a 'both ways' kinda deal." Duo replied leisurely, nodding when he was poured more of the whiskey but focused a bit more on his pizza. Which was in a shambles by now. He'd managed to tear it up almost completely into pizza spaghetti... Which was fine, he could still eat it.

"You were married, guess that was the bit I was hung up on." He grinned over, though Wufei was finding something awfully interesting in the bottom of his shot glass to notice. "That another assumption I fucked up?"

"I wouldn't know what to do with a woman if I found one in my bed," he admitted, and this time his cheeks did color a little. "It was an arranged marriage, we'd been promised to one another when we were still infants. I suppose they assumed we'd figure it out in time, if we lived long enough," he shrugged his shoulders. "So, yes, I suppose you did 'fuck it up' a little."

He looked up then, offering Duo a small smile. "But I've probably fucked up this one -- that you and Hilde were together."

"Not completely... We tried. But we're better as friends." Since they were being honest then there was no point in lying.

"She wanted more than I could give... She knew better than most what we'd all gone through, but I couldn't be what she needed right then, y'know? So we're still friends. We meet every once in a while to get somethin to eat or hangout. But as a couple? Nah, I fucked that one up." He'd been a broken mess and while Hilde had wanted to try and 'heal' him, he just couldn't keep up with a 'normal' relationship. It had fallen apart pretty quickly.

He nodded a little as he listened. "We were all jagged edges at the end of the war," he agreed quietly. It was exactly how he'd ended up in Mariemaia's army -- he hadn't been able to handle the peace, hadn't been able to connect to anyone or anything after having lost so much so quickly.

He took his shot even though he wasn't supposed to, according to the rules of the game he'd made up, and poured himself a refill before taking another bite of pizza. "I'm glad it didn't drive her away completely. Having someone that can understand what we've been through is a boon."

"We ended things... okay enough. Took a few months for her to come round, but I'm glad I didn't lose a friend. They're hard to come by." Or tolerate. Duo could befriend most anyone if he put his mind to it. But keeping people around him? There were only so many he could stand to have around for any prolonged length of time.

"... There was one rumour I'd heard. Never had the balls to ask if it was true." He wasn't sure if he'd even say it now, but since he'd started he knew there was no way he could back down now. Duo had set himself up, so he may as well carry on and hope Wufei didn't storm out... or spontaneously combust. "You and Khushrenada...?" Since Wufei had no admitted to liking guys, this was one rumour that could hold some weight to it now. "Did you and him...?"

He went positively crimson at the suggestion, and tossed back a shot. "In my defense, he was extremely charismatic, and I was entirely unprepared for the reality of facing him. He managed to corner me into a kiss, and there was no hope for me after that," he smiled wryly, glancing up at Duo to gauge his reaction. "It seemed at the time that he knew everything about me, but I realize now that he was simply more experienced."

Duo, for how animated he could be, could also be very still when he chose to. And right then he was. He showed a near complete lack of emotion as he listened to Wufei. Because he wasn't entirely sure how he felt about hearing that rumour being true. He remembered knocking someone on their ass for even suggesting it and distantly wondered if he could find that person and apologise.

His lashes lowered and he looked down at his mess of pizza. Most of which was gone aside from the crust.

"I should get another slice. You want another slice, Wufei?" Duo scooted forward and put his shot glass down before getting to his feet and padding off to the kitchen to dump the cold crusts and grab another two slices of pizza.

Wufei dropped his gaze, swallowing visibly. "Yeah. Another slice would be good," he agreed as his smile evaporated. He focused on pouring himself another shot while Duo was busy getting more pizza, and wondered just how badly he'd fucked up by sharing that.

Not fucked up. Just needing a moment to process.

Duo ended up just leaning with his hands on the counter, lost in thought for a long moment.

Could they really be blamed for the things they did in the past? Wufei was his own person and, by the sound of it, had been used by that asshole. So why did it make Duo feel... He shook his head and pulled himself together. Grabbed the two slices of pizza he really just didn't feel like eating right then, and carried them back out.

With a sigh he dropped back down onto the sofa and set the plate in his lap after he'd kicked his feet up onto the table, narrowly missing his shot glass.

"One for you." He grabbed one of the slices and placed it on Wufei's plate. Then made himself grin and grabbed the other. "And one for me!"

"Thank you," Wufei replied, smiling a little as he watched Duo for a moment. He knew the other well enough to recognize the mask for what it was, picking up his slice and taking a bite as he considered his next question carefully, and decided that being a coward was simply unacceptable.

"Are you angry that I slept with him, or just shocked that I could manage to forge an actual human connection?" He kept his tone light, half-teasing and half-serious so it would be easy for Duo to deflect the question if he wanted to. People often thought Wufei wasn't very good at socializing, but when he cared for someone he could be downright sensitive.
