RED STRING OF FATE MEME
It's a bit of Japanese folklore that true lovers are connected to each other via a red string that represents destiny. But what comes first, the love or the string?

What if they came at the same time?

This meme is one part love at first sight and one part soulmate meme. You'll find yourself connected to something by a red string tied around your pinkie that you just can't get off. Well, may as well see what- or who- is on the other end! When you do see who it is, no matter who it may be, you'll fill a sudden and intense rush of love for them - whatever love means to you. You'll want to kiss them, hold them, protect them, and be with them forever. Who cares if you've never met before or aren't even from the same world?

But every rose has its thorns.

Instead of a red string, you may have a blue string. Oh, you'll still adore whoever it is that you're connected to, but it will be all the bad things about love: obsession, codependence, jealousy. You'll never let this person out of your sight, and they'll love you back. No matter what.

HOW TO PLAY
  1. Comment with your character. Put your preferences in the subject line, as well as if you want red strings, blue strings, or both.
  2. Comment around to others.
  3. Thread.
  4. Sure, the string doesn't seem to have a limit (it's pretty long, after all), but if the two of you are apart by more than a meter, the string will hurt you in some comical way.
  5. Oh. And the only way to untie the knot? Is by doing any sort of intimate act.

Duo thanked Wufei for the coffee and slid himself into a chair at the small kitchen table. He blew across the top, cooling it down while he listened to what Wufei had to say to him.

He was quiet for a little while even after Wufei had finished talking, gathering his own thoughts... He supposed he had to meet Wufei halfway. While he didn't want to feel like he was forcing his feelings onto the other, there was no escaping it now that Wufei knew.

"... I've had this thread since I started my gundam training." He finally admitted and leaned back in his seat, head lifting at the same time. "I've always known it was you. Always. But I couldn't... We've been friends, I didn't think you'd be able to like me in the way I wanted. And when you called, it was a woman you wanted. That's one thing I can't give you."

Duo wrapped his gloved hands around his mug and sighed heavily. "But I'd like you to stay... if you're really willing."

Wufei plated up eggs and sausage, bringing them over, and the oatmeal, too, as he listened and turned Duo's words over in his mind. He needed to take his time, to make sure that he said what he meant and not what first popped into his mind.

So it wasn't until he settled in the seat across from Duo that he replied. "A woman is what I expected, not wanted," he replied softly. "I'm going to have to take some time, to sort out what my wants truly are, now that I'm free to have them," and wasn't throwing himself into 80 hour workweeks anymore. Working salvage was going to be a great deal more downtime than he was used to. "Willing implies that the staying part is a burden," he smirked a little, dragging his spoon through his oatmeal. "The only burden is trying to stop myself from saying things without thinking them through first. I don't want to hurt you, especially the way I did last night." He'd been punching below the belt and hadn't even realized it until about three hours ago.

There was a little flash of warmth, as his hand moved closer, to grab his own mug of coffee, and he let out a pleasant little sigh. That sensation, he could get used to.

"Don't sweat it." Duo replied with a shake of his head. "It was my fault. I guess... I was on edge. I knew what was gonna happen when you showed up and I was just braced for impact."

He picked up a fork and idly poked at the egg for a moment before he spoke again.

"... Was I wrong?" He asked softly. "Should I have told you before now? That I'm..." Wow, he couldn't even say the word. He'd spent so many years hiding it from everyone, even himself, that it was hard to break the habit. But when Wufei's hand came closer, that familiar feeling came to him, like it was trying to settle his turbulent thoughts. And for the most part it did.

"I think we managed to make a mess of it together. I wasn't... prepared for it," he shrugged, and smiled a little at the question, shaking his head. "I can't imagine I would've reacted well. I had convinced myself that I would never receive a string, so much so that I'm quite literally going through puberty now because I used medication to postpone it so I wouldn't have to face the possibility of being wrong about it," he wiggled his pinky, making the string wiggle a little, too. "I may seem very confident outwardly, but I am profoundly insecure about quite a few things. There was a short time during the war when I believed my string would point to Treize when it formed."

Oh, he knew... It was another reason that Duo had kept his trap shut.

Subconsciously he began to rub his fingers, lightly rubbing his thumb across the third and little finger like they itched.

"So it wouldn't have made a difference.... Okay. Okay." Duo took a deep breath then and sighed softly. "Then I guess the balls in your court, Wufei. I'm not exactly what you'd call a catch." He said with a small, self-depreciating smile.

It would have made a difference; it would've made things much worse for Duo, and made this part much harder for himself. He didn't say that, because they were both smart enough to do that math, and he dropped his gaze to his plate as he considered what Duo had said.

"I suppose that depends on what you think a good catch is," Wufei said softly. "You're by no means traditional, especially in the Chinese sense, but you are warm, and passionate, and strong. And more importantly," he pauses for dramatic effect, glances up to meet Duo's gaze. "We've seen some shit together." It's an attempt at a joke, to lighten the mood a little, though he meant every word of it, down into his bones. There were a lot of things about Duo that might be considered traditionally unappealing -- he worked in salvage, for fuck's sake -- but there was quite a bit to be said for understanding the sort of trauma they'd both been through. The loss. The brutal training to prepare them for war. The war itself, and all the things that brought. And the peace, too, was traumatic in its own way.

His cheeks flushed darkly as he found himself overwhelmed with the urge to kiss him, resisting it as much because of the table being in the way as because he didn't know if Duo would be even remotely receptive to that right now.

If only Wufei knew... the reason he had thrown himself into the salvage business... was because he was alone. He was on his own. He'd long since given up hope that his soulmate would find him and want him. And since he already knew who his was, no one else could really come close. The idea of settling down with someone else, anyone else, just never entered Duo's mind. So he'd thrown himself into a job that would keep him away from people for weeks or months at a time. A job that would include a fair amount of risk...

The joke does get a twitch of a smile from Duo. His lashes lowered and he huffed a soft laugh.

"I guess you're right there. But it's that 'non-traditional' part I'm worried about. I've no family. I've a questionable past... Not many can look past those things..."

He preens ever so slightly when he earns that laugh, smile widening a bit in response.

The words, though, get a chuckle from him. "I'm not so different. The only family I have are very distant cousins, and even if you don't consider the terrorism questionable, I was married at 14. Being someone's second spouse is pretty taboo in most places. But I'm not even looking in that direction to begin with. I'm looking at the way we fought and bled together. At how patiently you've been waiting for me. At the way your face looked when you watched me, thinking I couldn't see. This direction is much more interesting. And besides. You've got a big, fancy ship. I'm clearly in it for the money, too."

"... The way my face looked?" What had he done? He'd always thought he'd hidden his feelings well. No one hd ever noticed... except one little shit who would remain nameless. But he was a cheat so it didn't found. He hacked into his feelings without his permission.

Then he laughed, a real laugh. "Wu... you joke, but I'm far from being poor." His biggest spend after the war had been an apartment. The second was his ship, and he'd sold his apartment. There wasn't much Duo wanted or needed in life, so most of his money went into savings accounts and... maybe some dabbling in stocks that had worked out well for him. Being able to pick and choose what salvage missions he went on was pretty lucrative as well. But Duo wasn't someone who would boast about these things. Though somehow, right now with Wufei watching him and joking, he wanted to make sure that Wufei didn't think he was downgrading. Even if Duo believed that was exactly what was happening.

Wufei shrugged. "I misplaced the cause at the time," obviously, "but I caught you looking at me a few times, usually when I was doing my forms. I... found it pleasant."

His smile warmed when Duo laughed, and lifted a brow at the reply. "Then maybe I really am in it for the money," he teased. "I inherited everything from the colony but it felt too much like blood money, so I had Quatre help me donate it all. Part of it created and maintained a memorial to my colony, and the rest went into scholarships. All I have now is my salary from Preventers and what I've saved from that." It was a far cry from the wealth he'd grown up with, but it was more than enough for him.
maxwellsdaemon: (Whistle)

[personal profile] maxwellsdaemon 2022-01-20 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Duo was actually shocked by that. He'd thought Wufei was a little like Quatre in that respect. Now he felt stupid. But at the same time strangely proud of Wufei for what he did with that money. He'd have done the same thing.

"Speaking of the Preventers... Just how long did you take off from them?" How long did Duo have him for on this little trip. Which was just a trip. He had no job lined up. He'd just wanted to take his ship for a spin and show it off.

"Six months, but Une has the option to call me back at any time for emergencies," but if something big enough for that went down, Duo was likely to be called in, too.

"Between unused vacation days and my savings, I could probably extend it to a full year, if I don't decide to just switch over to contract and stay in the salvage business," he shrugged. "She knows why I'm taking the time, at any rate, so she knew there was a possibility I wouldn't be coming back on full time. I do spend an unhealthy amount of time in the field," according to Yuy, of all people, so it was probably much worse than he thought.

[personal profile] maxwellsdaemon 2022-01-20 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
His brows rose as he cut up the egg and ate a little, amazed THAT Wufei had taken that much leave for this. Not that he'd known he would have found his soulmate so fast, but six months was a long time. And then a year?

But all of that faded to the background after the next thing Wufei said. Duo almost choked on his egg.

"What?!... You... You wanna go into salvage? You? Why?" and please god don't say it was because of him. Duo wasn't going to be happy if he was the reason that Wufei was changing his life around.
pilot05: (Smile)

[personal profile] pilot05 2022-01-21 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
He couldn't help laughing. "I said if," he replied, waggling his spoon in Duo's direction before scooping up another bite of oatmeal and eating it, giving Duo a moment to work that through his brain before Wufei continued.

"If I like it, and if we work things out," and he was confident that second part would happen, "then why not? It'll bring in plenty for us to live on, gives us the freedom to make our own schedules, and we'll be together. It'll even get Yuy off my case about overworking." He rolled his eyes.

[personal profile] maxwellsdaemon 2022-01-21 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, if then. Duo relaxed a little after that, even if he was being laughed at as well.

"It's just that you don't seem the type?" He said honestly. Cleaning up the mess they'd made of space, salvaging anything worthwhile, that didn't really feel like it suited Wufei at all. His work as a Preventer though? That was him. But... Duo could be wrong. The way Wufei spoke made him wonder. Would he actually like this kind of life? Wouldn't it drive him crazy or leave him with regrets?

"Together, huh..." Duo reached for his coffee and took a long drink of it. Then used the mug to hide a smile. "Kinda like how that sounds."
pilot05: (Smile)

[personal profile] pilot05 2022-01-21 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
"I might not be," Wufei replied with a shrug. "But I wasn't the type to go to war, either, and as you figured out last night, I haven't exactly done an abundance of introspection. With all the downtime involved in salvage, I'll be able to do so." He didn't say that he'd been avoiding it, quite literally keeping himself too busy to think about everything they'd been through, about who he was or what he wanted. He ran from one mission to the next, exhausting himself until injury forced him into a period of respite.

It was, as Heero often pointed out, extremely unhealthy.

"It does sound nice," he agreed, trading spoon for fork, and making his way through his little pile of scrambled egg.

"Alright..." Alright, maybe they could actually do this? At least they could give it some time and see how things went. Nothing had to be set in stone right now. There wasn't a rush. Duo had waited years already, what was a little longer?

He lowered his coffee then and offered up a real smile before he focused on his breakfast before it became too cold. He'd have still ate it, but it was more enjoyable when it was actually warm.

Once he was finished he picked up his dishes and took them to the sink to wash up.

"So I'll. Before we set out, is there anythin you need to make your stay more comfortable? Anythin at all. I'm gonna guess you've more luggage than you brought with you last night?"
pilot05: (Smile)

[personal profile] pilot05 2022-01-21 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
Wufei cleaned his plate in the companionable silence, and maybe a little pleased with himself for managing to say the right things long enough to smooth over the mess he'd made the night before. It was nice, to know he was actually capable of it, that he wasn't the lost cause he'd oft been accused of being.

"I arranged for the shuttle courier to deliver my trunk later this morning," Wufei replied with a nod. "It's the standard size," since he hadn't known what sort of lodging Duo's ship had, he figured that was his safest bet. "There's some incense in it, but if you don't want me to burn it on the ship I won't remove it from the airtight bag." It could be a strong odor, and could cover up other important scents if the ship was damaged.

There were three bedrooms on his ship. Of course his was the largest and sported one of the few luxuries he'd allowed himself; a king sized bed. But the other two rooms were decent sized too. The one Wufei had picked had a double bed while the last a single. There was enough storage to keep their things but the rooms otherwise weren't that fancy.

"Incense is fine." Duo smiled. "I've no problem with that." He finished washing his dishes and grabbed Wufei's to do the same. "So how do you feel about just taking her out for a spin when you're settled? I was thinking to the belt and back?" that would take close to a week, long enough for them to get a feel for each other and what life would be like on board his ship.
pilot05: (Smile)

[personal profile] pilot05 2022-01-21 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
Wufei slid the dishes over when Duo reached for them, turning to watch him work with a thoughtful hum. "Sounds like a good way to test the waters," he agreed easily. "And if I do go stir-crazy it won't be so long that you'll want to kill me before we get back," he was teasing, mostly. He had enough self-control not to be annoying, even if he was going out of his mind with boredom. The nightmares were more likely to be a problem than anything else. "How much work do we need to do on her before she's space-worthy? Or are you down to the cosmetics now?"
maxwellsdaemon: (Default)

[personal profile] maxwellsdaemon 2022-01-21 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
"Ah, she's always been space-worthy. I just expected to go up and be up there for a while, so wanted all those creature comforts I'd need to make it bareable." and now that he had Wufei along for the ride, Duo was thinking about what else he could need. Extra food would probably be needed, other thing...

"I'll probably carry on working on her even when we're travelling." Duo glanced over at Wufei and grinned. "You any good with pluming?"
