![]() RED STRING OF FATE MEME |
It's a bit of Japanese folklore that true lovers are connected to each other via a red string that represents destiny. But what comes first, the love or the string? What if they came at the same time? This meme is one part love at first sight and one part soulmate meme. You'll find yourself connected to something by a red string tied around your pinkie that you just can't get off. Well, may as well see what- or who- is on the other end! When you do see who it is, no matter who it may be, you'll fill a sudden and intense rush of love for them - whatever love means to you. You'll want to kiss them, hold them, protect them, and be with them forever. Who cares if you've never met before or aren't even from the same world? But every rose has its thorns. Instead of a red string, you may have a blue string. Oh, you'll still adore whoever it is that you're connected to, but it will be all the bad things about love: obsession, codependence, jealousy. You'll never let this person out of your sight, and they'll love you back. No matter what. HOW TO PLAY

He was quiet for a little while even after Wufei had finished talking, gathering his own thoughts... He supposed he had to meet Wufei halfway. While he didn't want to feel like he was forcing his feelings onto the other, there was no escaping it now that Wufei knew.
"... I've had this thread since I started my gundam training." He finally admitted and leaned back in his seat, head lifting at the same time. "I've always known it was you. Always. But I couldn't... We've been friends, I didn't think you'd be able to like me in the way I wanted. And when you called, it was a woman you wanted. That's one thing I can't give you."
Duo wrapped his gloved hands around his mug and sighed heavily. "But I'd like you to stay... if you're really willing."

So it wasn't until he settled in the seat across from Duo that he replied. "A woman is what I expected, not wanted," he replied softly. "I'm going to have to take some time, to sort out what my wants truly are, now that I'm free to have them," and wasn't throwing himself into 80 hour workweeks anymore. Working salvage was going to be a great deal more downtime than he was used to. "Willing implies that the staying part is a burden," he smirked a little, dragging his spoon through his oatmeal. "The only burden is trying to stop myself from saying things without thinking them through first. I don't want to hurt you, especially the way I did last night." He'd been punching below the belt and hadn't even realized it until about three hours ago.
There was a little flash of warmth, as his hand moved closer, to grab his own mug of coffee, and he let out a pleasant little sigh. That sensation, he could get used to.

He picked up a fork and idly poked at the egg for a moment before he spoke again.
"... Was I wrong?" He asked softly. "Should I have told you before now? That I'm..." Wow, he couldn't even say the word. He'd spent so many years hiding it from everyone, even himself, that it was hard to break the habit. But when Wufei's hand came closer, that familiar feeling came to him, like it was trying to settle his turbulent thoughts. And for the most part it did.

Subconsciously he began to rub his fingers, lightly rubbing his thumb across the third and little finger like they itched.
"So it wouldn't have made a difference.... Okay. Okay." Duo took a deep breath then and sighed softly. "Then I guess the balls in your court, Wufei. I'm not exactly what you'd call a catch." He said with a small, self-depreciating smile.
no subject
"I suppose that depends on what you think a good catch is," Wufei said softly. "You're by no means traditional, especially in the Chinese sense, but you are warm, and passionate, and strong. And more importantly," he pauses for dramatic effect, glances up to meet Duo's gaze. "We've seen some shit together." It's an attempt at a joke, to lighten the mood a little, though he meant every word of it, down into his bones. There were a lot of things about Duo that might be considered traditionally unappealing -- he worked in salvage, for fuck's sake -- but there was quite a bit to be said for understanding the sort of trauma they'd both been through. The loss. The brutal training to prepare them for war. The war itself, and all the things that brought. And the peace, too, was traumatic in its own way.
His cheeks flushed darkly as he found himself overwhelmed with the urge to kiss him, resisting it as much because of the table being in the way as because he didn't know if Duo would be even remotely receptive to that right now.

The joke does get a twitch of a smile from Duo. His lashes lowered and he huffed a soft laugh.
"I guess you're right there. But it's that 'non-traditional' part I'm worried about. I've no family. I've a questionable past... Not many can look past those things..."

The words, though, get a chuckle from him. "I'm not so different. The only family I have are very distant cousins, and even if you don't consider the terrorism questionable, I was married at 14. Being someone's second spouse is pretty taboo in most places. But I'm not even looking in that direction to begin with. I'm looking at the way we fought and bled together. At how patiently you've been waiting for me. At the way your face looked when you watched me, thinking I couldn't see. This direction is much more interesting. And besides. You've got a big, fancy ship. I'm clearly in it for the money, too."
no subject
Then he laughed, a real laugh. "Wu... you joke, but I'm far from being poor." His biggest spend after the war had been an apartment. The second was his ship, and he'd sold his apartment. There wasn't much Duo wanted or needed in life, so most of his money went into savings accounts and... maybe some dabbling in stocks that had worked out well for him. Being able to pick and choose what salvage missions he went on was pretty lucrative as well. But Duo wasn't someone who would boast about these things. Though somehow, right now with Wufei watching him and joking, he wanted to make sure that Wufei didn't think he was downgrading. Even if Duo believed that was exactly what was happening.

His smile warmed when Duo laughed, and lifted a brow at the reply. "Then maybe I really am in it for the money," he teased. "I inherited everything from the colony but it felt too much like blood money, so I had Quatre help me donate it all. Part of it created and maintained a memorial to my colony, and the rest went into scholarships. All I have now is my salary from Preventers and what I've saved from that." It was a far cry from the wealth he'd grown up with, but it was more than enough for him.
no subject
"Speaking of the Preventers... Just how long did you take off from them?" How long did Duo have him for on this little trip. Which was just a trip. He had no job lined up. He'd just wanted to take his ship for a spin and show it off.
no subject
"Between unused vacation days and my savings, I could probably extend it to a full year, if I don't decide to just switch over to contract and stay in the salvage business," he shrugged. "She knows why I'm taking the time, at any rate, so she knew there was a possibility I wouldn't be coming back on full time. I do spend an unhealthy amount of time in the field," according to Yuy, of all people, so it was probably much worse than he thought.
no subject
But all of that faded to the background after the next thing Wufei said. Duo almost choked on his egg.
"What?!... You... You wanna go into salvage? You? Why?" and please god don't say it was because of him. Duo wasn't going to be happy if he was the reason that Wufei was changing his life around.
no subject
"If I like it, and if we work things out," and he was confident that second part would happen, "then why not? It'll bring in plenty for us to live on, gives us the freedom to make our own schedules, and we'll be together. It'll even get Yuy off my case about overworking." He rolled his eyes.
no subject
"It's just that you don't seem the type?" He said honestly. Cleaning up the mess they'd made of space, salvaging anything worthwhile, that didn't really feel like it suited Wufei at all. His work as a Preventer though? That was him. But... Duo could be wrong. The way Wufei spoke made him wonder. Would he actually like this kind of life? Wouldn't it drive him crazy or leave him with regrets?
"Together, huh..." Duo reached for his coffee and took a long drink of it. Then used the mug to hide a smile. "Kinda like how that sounds."
no subject
It was, as Heero often pointed out, extremely unhealthy.
"It does sound nice," he agreed, trading spoon for fork, and making his way through his little pile of scrambled egg.

He lowered his coffee then and offered up a real smile before he focused on his breakfast before it became too cold. He'd have still ate it, but it was more enjoyable when it was actually warm.
Once he was finished he picked up his dishes and took them to the sink to wash up.
"So I'll. Before we set out, is there anythin you need to make your stay more comfortable? Anythin at all. I'm gonna guess you've more luggage than you brought with you last night?"
no subject
"I arranged for the shuttle courier to deliver my trunk later this morning," Wufei replied with a nod. "It's the standard size," since he hadn't known what sort of lodging Duo's ship had, he figured that was his safest bet. "There's some incense in it, but if you don't want me to burn it on the ship I won't remove it from the airtight bag." It could be a strong odor, and could cover up other important scents if the ship was damaged.
no subject
"Incense is fine." Duo smiled. "I've no problem with that." He finished washing his dishes and grabbed Wufei's to do the same. "So how do you feel about just taking her out for a spin when you're settled? I was thinking to the belt and back?" that would take close to a week, long enough for them to get a feel for each other and what life would be like on board his ship.

"I'll probably carry on working on her even when we're travelling." Duo glanced over at Wufei and grinned. "You any good with pluming?"
